ME1 Quicksave not working with latest Windows 10 update

I'm going to post this here and hope someone else may have run into this and has a resolution.  Been doing another run through of ME1 and everything was working fine until last weeks Windows 10 update.  Now I can no longer Quicksave and get an error message which I'll attach in a screenshot.  When I look in my saves folder with explorer, instead of the saves being saved as a file they are being saved as an inaccessible empty folder (I am the admin on the PC), if I restart the PC I can then access the empty folder to delete it.  I've been working with EA support with no resolve.  To include deleting all Origin cache, uninstalling, reinstalling, running in Windows 7 compatabilty mode (it was running Windows XP service pack 3 mode, prior).  fyi once I do f6 quicksave and exit the game and restart and click resume it looks the screen and I can't even alt tab to any other running program ie Origin, even ctl alt del to get to task manager up I can't switch to it.  I can see them with alt tab, but it won't switch to them.  I have to log off to close it.  Any suggestions? Cannot play the game in this state.

Rolled back to previous Windows 10 before Fall Creator, Quicksave and Save now work, now the big question do I want to try to re-update to the latest version of Windows 10 and see if it was just a glitch, the things we do for our gaming enjoyment. 😉

Try to run the "Origin.exe" and the "MassEffect.exe" in Administrator mode. (right click the exe files > properties > Compatibility > tick "Run this Program as an Administrator")

If it don''t works with enabled XP or Windows 7 compatibility mode try to run the "MassEffect.exe" without compatibility mode.

  • No luck tried XP service pack 3, Windows 7, No Compatabilty as administrator.  It is still giving the same error message using the Quicksave, and still saving the files as a folder instead of files, also noticed a zip file being created for the save also.  Unable to see what is in the folders says empty but not accessible.  Once I restart the PC the file folders are gone, and I can load the game again, but if I don't restart the PC and try to load the game after trying to save it, it locks the screen on the game screen and forces me to log off to be able to access any other programs (Alt Tab works, but won't actually bring up the program I select).  Fyi Mass Effect 3 works fine as far as Multiplayer, guess I should see if the save game feature works there, too. 😉

This looks like a permissions problem or a problem with your user account after the Windows update.

Try to repair the game. (in Origin > Game Library > right click ME > Repair)

If that don't helps, run the Windows System File Checker Sfc /scannnow and post the concluding message.

Also create a new Windows user account (Administrator.)  > reboot > log on to the new account > test.

  • Quick Save is working fine for me in ME running on Win10-64bit.

No idea what's causing your issue.  😞

  • Did all that prior. sfc /scannow was normal.  ME2 is also doing the same thing. Uninstalled both games, deleted all doc folders for Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2, Deleted all Origin cached again.  Created a new Admin account on the PC.  Logged into new account, started Origin as admin, took about an hour for Origin to reverify all other games before Downloading Mass Effect. Started game, new character, and 2nd time hit quicksave getting the same error message.  Guess its time to roll back the Windows update and see what happens.  Anyone got a couple grand for a new PC? 😉

fyi Updated Windows, and same issue, ME1 & 2 will not save.  Going to try Microsoft support tomorrow, wonder if I'll have any better luck with them (yep I've got a bad attitude right now 😉 )

  • Update from Origin today while I was on with Windows tech support, and of course it now works.  Figures, just as you are about to show someone the issue it disappears. 😉  Good Gaming people, and thank you Origin, it only took a week for you to fix it. 😉
