They are 'additional'.
They take you to minor locations.
Treat you to minor stories.
Give you a little XP.
There's nothing essential, they are entirely optional.
A lot of these Tasks don't tell you where to go so they can be very time consuming. For that reason, I didn't bother finishing several of them. They're not required.
Actually some point you to "minivaults", some open you additional galaxy "anomaly detected, probe launch, probe away" oops that's ME2/3 VO... Some give you additional insight to the lore, and some net you a decent chunk of XP.
Since a few of them are bugged, I suggest not insisting on them in your first playthrough, solve some easy ones, others leave for postpatch run.
No I didn't mean leave it for NewGame+. NG+ is also currenlty bugged. 😉
You don't need to complete them. Some of them are broken and as far as I can tell, most don't have nav points. I believe these were thrown in as filler and little thought was really given to them.
I have yet to not complete a single task. Currently, the only task that is being extraordinarily slow are the Roecar (sp?) Manifesto's on Hvarl. To do the tasks, simply drive past encampments and listen for SAM. He'll tell you there is something of note. If there isn't, you or your companions will have some comment. Nice and simple.
Oh and most tasks don't have waypoints, nor are they within specific encampments (at least for PC).
