I actually don't mind the muted players because it forces the player to be an active defender. The problem with the other way is that people were abusing their computers having ridiculous reaction times and positioning. This is the much better alternative and creates a skill gap.
If it were up to me though there would definitely be more of a balance. Can't have the examples you're showing pop up where they get skated into and don't do anything.

I always preached 'active defending' last year. However, at least in '22 - incidental contact made it hard for players to simply walk right through A.I. defenders like they can in '23.

That same A.I. even get the benefit of not having to adhere to the animations that a human controlled player would otherwise have to deal with - so they essentially work themselves in to an open position with speed and absolutely ZERO input from the puck carrier.
So the reliance on A.I. works both ways - there's no button that allows us to control all 5 skaters at once. It would appear that on the defensive side of the puck, A.I. needs to be 'muted' in order for the offensive players to get the advantage, but on the offensive side of the puck - they get to reap all of the benefits of having the A.i. do a lot of work for them.

If I were in control, I'd make it so that there was more goal variety in the games and make the AI defense more active. As it stands, you can only score within the hash marks for 95% of goals in this game. Horrendously imbalanced, so there sadly needs to be opportunity towards the net.
If they allowed more goal variety I think this would be the way but it they added this in every game would finish 1-0. - 3 years ago@KidShowtime1867 It’s a huge disappointment how awful and muted the AI is like you said… it makes it super frustrating to play the game.. im only an offline player.. and the AI for both teams is just ridiculous.. it’s essentially a 1v5 because your CPU teammates are pylons that don’t really know what to do..
