If you're able to play fine on your own, it could be a limitation of gamesharing or an issue with your home network. Are you and your brother playing on the same home network?
Yes we were on the same home network but I don't think it come from there. We played Borderlands 3 (also through gamesharing) sunday night and everything was fine, it only happened in nhl23.
I beleive that if it was an direct issue with gamesharing, my brother would get a message saying something along the line of ''you don't possess the game, make sure its installed on your xbox'' and if it was the network, why would it crash directly to the xbox dashboard? wouldnt it say something like ''you lost connection, make sure your xbox is connected to the internet'' or something like that and just send us back to nhl main menu?
While it happened a few times that we crashed simultanously, mostly it was separatly. We never had messages mentioning issues with conectivity or anything gamesharing related. It was just sudden crashes mainly at specific moments (dressing room 9 time out of 10). We would just immadiately click the nhl23 icon again and back in.
Again, we never had problems before thats why I beleive it has something to do with the latest patch and not something on my end...but who knows..
I'll see if I can get a few games going alone today or in the next days and I'll let you know for sure if anything (or not) happened. I will also be playing a lot more with my brother this coming friday/saturday see if it keep happening.

Since it just started happening, it's possible this is related to your home network. It would be good to power cycle everything. To do that, unplug your modem/router and console. After 2 minutes plug in the modem/router. Let them come back online completely. Then plug in your console and start it up.
Also, check your router settings to make sure UPnP is enabled. Something else to look at is the NAT setting on both of your consoles. Does it say Strict by chance? This is in the Xbox network settings screen.

@EA_Aljo Hello again,
Just did all of this,
Enabled UPnP,
NAT is and was already Open.
I won't have an answer right away as if it changed something so it may take me a day or two to test out...and most specifically only next weekend when we'll be playing together for worth mentioning hours.
I still don't see how the network have anything to do with the game crashing all the way back to the xbox dashbord though, it make no sense, its not related and again it only happened in Nhl23.
Thanks for your time nonetheless, I'll let you know when I have more news about it.

As aslways, yes! Hard to tell exactly what happened that one weekend, guess it really had something to do with the gamesharing or the game ooor both and the timing with the patch was something else. Possibly just a big bad timed coincidence, I don't know.
But what I know is it worked great this time around this weekend and trust me, I tested it big time, so its all good now! Hopefully I won't have to deal with it again in a near future.
I did all the reboot and small change you suggested. Can't say if its really what resolved the issue but it seemed to help in the end of the day.
Thanks again Aljo, have a good day

This has nothing to do with game sharing I get the same issue and I don’t game share. Every time I try to play a simple play now game. If I try to change jerseys… game crash to Home Screen. If I don’t change jerseys and power through it… game crash to Home Screen before the game starts. I can play ones no problem. But tried to create a team… game crashed to home. I have reinstalled the game 3-4 times. I have power cycles everything. The game was made like *. Which like how? You’ve been making the game for over 20+ years. We spent a lot of money on these games for them not to work.

Hello, @humongusfungus93
Are you always trying to change to the same jersey when it crashes? If so, try changing to a different jersey instead. If that doesn't help, try clearing the personal saved data for NHL 23. To do that, press the Guide button and then highlight the NHL 23 tile. Then, hit the Menu button. It's the small one to the right of the Guide button with 3 horizontal lines on it. Next, go to Manage game and add-ons > Saved data. Delete the file with your gamertag on it. There is the risk of losing offline saves and changes to settings you've made. Normally, those download from the cloud, but I can't guarantee this. Let me know what happens. Thanks!

Nope still crashing. Doesn’t matter what jersey I pick. I also deleted the personal data. Still crashing. Game freezes and quits to Home Screen.

Please try these suggestions -
Clear persistent storage -
- Press the Guide button on your controller
- Go to Settings > Devices & connections > Blu-ray > Persistent storage
- Hit Clear Persistent Storage
Also, Clear your alternate MAC address with these steps -
- Go to your Xbox Settings
- Go to "Network", then "Advanced Network Settings"
- Click on "Alternate MAC Address", and then click "Clear"
Power cycle your console by holding down the power button for about 10 seconds. Then, unplug the power cord for at least 10 seconds. Plug back in and start up your console.
Let me know if that helps or not. Thanks!
