Like in Dark Souls, there are many soft and hard caps when it comes to player attributes; I can't speak for an 83OVR player, but an 87 or 88 can definitely even the playing field - Couple that with things like fatigue, synergies, and positioning, it doesn't surprise me a higher rated team can be put in a bad spot
