Multi-team Expansion draft for a Custom league.

Question

I haven't seen this talked about elsewhere, pardon me if it has.

So basically it's not possible to do a multi-team expansion draft when setting up a custom league, at least directly. My idea was to create several custom teams, add them to a CL and do an expansion draft for all of them, and then proceed to play this created franchise mode with these teams included, even if I could control only one team.

I've been tinkering with this in the NHL 23 trial, and if you create a custom league there is no expansion draft option for any of your added teams. Every custom team's roster is determined solely by the players you add to the team in creation zone.

In CZ, if you add players to your created team directly from NHL teams, this leads to player duplicates in the CL. Say you add Zegras from ANA's roster to your CT, a Zegras will appear on both your CT and Anaheim.

If you add free agents to your CT roster however, there will be no duplicates in the CL, the added FA-players do not appear in free agency in the CL. I've yet to try this next one, but in theory you could move desired NHL players to free agency and then gather your CT expansion roster from them.

To summarize, the only way to do an expansion draft to multiple created teams for CL, seems to be to add your desired roster from the creation zone's free agent list. Moving NHL players to FAs for this purpose, not only does this mess up regular rosters elsewhere in the game but all of this feels like such a hassle and isn't enough for me to warrant a purchase of the game.

Anyone else have experience about this?

@Blad3s_0f_5teel I like doing one that is i draft no player under the age of 30, lol. So its all old dudes, lol. Or no one over 21. Or I will make rules, like i cannot sign a FA that has a higher overall then 85 for 5 seasons. . It forces me to build through the draft. Just interesting ideas.

@Blad3s_0f_5teel When I do Fantasy drafts I try to give myself a theme of players I pick, same as I would with an expansion draft. Adding multi team Custom League and a Fantasy Draft is pretty fun. I have found some pretty fun Settings for Custom League though. If they would just fix Full Broadcast and the coaching strategies, I would actually be a pretty happy Franchise player.

I wish those would return, too. The missing features are what are keeping me from buying the game, and it doesn't help that luring RFAs to your team won't cost you draft picks. I'm happy to get my hockey fix from NHL 22 bought on Black friday last year.

Yeah, I did a post about this issue a week ago or so. The more I think about it, the stranger it is that there wasn't a multi-team expansion draft option from game launch.

Like that actually seems like the easiest option. Expansion draft is already in the game, the protection list rules would be the exact same. Just instead of losing 1 player, you'd lose 2 or 3 or however many teams you're adding to your custom league.

It's good to know (but also bad at the same time) that other people are having the same frustrations. I really hope this gets addressed.

Agreed, one would think it'd be easy for them to just make an option for a multi-team expansion draft, building it like you said. Such a missed opportunity, it would be so much fun. Fantasy draft just doesn't do it for me.
