Are you both on PlayStation? I tried the controls @bruanor09 mentioned and was able to pass when using both examples. It would be good to hear from others on PlayStation that are experiencing the same issue.
@Kohawk11 It's also possible this is connection related. Are you wired or wireless? Did this just start happening or has it been going on since the release of NHL 23?
I’ve recently had to switch over from my previous controller to this one. I have used the controller both wired and unwired. I’ve factory reset the controller. I’ve deleted and reinstalled NHL 23. It only appears to be in game in NHL. I played Battlefield and the R2 button was working fine. When I use defensive switch, the only way I’m able to switch players is by holding R2 and using the joystick direction. Did the video I shared upload? Because that shows like 100% the weirdest situation I’ve ever had in a system.

The video didn't upload. It's always best to put them up on a site like YouTube and link them here.
Try deleting the personal saved data for NHL 23. It's possible you could lose any offline saves and changes to settings. Normally, those will download from the cloud, but I can't guarantee that will happen. Go to Settings/Storage/System. Locate NHL 23 and delete the saved data. Let me know if that helps or not.

here’s the video. And no this issue wasn’t fixed with deleting saved data. R2 still works only in menu.

Can confirm weird instances of my player not being able to pass properly from time to time - usually this is after I've been absolutely decimated by a huge hit and/or I've attempted a check/poke around someone and my arm completely breaks.
We usually fire it down for an icing or intentionally take an offside for things to 'reset'

tested on 2 gamepads
in other games works.moreover, in some cases, the pass works.
in most cases, this is exactly what happens - bruanor093 years agoSeasoned Veteran
it's the same with switching players. there is no switching when the keys are pressed at the same time. for example X+R2, R1+R2, R3+R2, triangle+R2,

I think passing using those button combinations is going to be pretty uncommon. However, we also are getting very few reports of this. In other cases, it was an issue with the controller so it would be good to try a new one just to be sure.

It wasn't super common but every few games it would happen and then after a stoppage they would be able to pass. We would just have our goalie hold on to it to get a stoppage. I know over half use hybrid but some say they use skill stick. I've never had it happen to me though.

I have now done the following to try and remedy this situation with nothing working:
Reset controller
Deleted and reinstalled NHL 23
Deleted Saved data for NHL 23
Plugged in Controller
Changed all controller settings
Replaced spring in R2 trigger
Still the same issue. With the haptic response I feel the vibration as if I’m charging up a pass, but when released nothing. Even quick taps do nothing.

Try turning off the Haptic Feedback in the PS5 settings. I know when I had a specialty controller on Xbox my passing was messed up because of the triggers not going down all the way and such.

I use my PS5 to play the PS4 version which doesn't use any special trigger effects and still have issues
