I think another company CAN make a game its just that the demand for a hockey game isn't as high as other major sports. I think the NHL does a horrendous job marketing their sport and Bettman only does things to make owners happy so the sport is not growing as much as many would hope. The NHL game series also doesn't help as it's stayed stagnant. Other companies do see this but due to sales figures they likely don't deem the work required to make a new game worth it. This is why EA can keep making poor games and still raking in cash, it's sad and from a business prospective I personally feel they could make more if they put a little more work into the game but they probably know more than I do and they think doing the bare minimum year in and year out is making more than putting some cash/ extra developers into adding more changes/ improvements.. that bit them with their NBA series recently and their Madden series before they bought exclusive rights. But with no competition they don't have to do any type of analysis if they don't care to. They MAY be able to make a decent amount more but why spend a few hundred grand in an effort to get more sales if it's not guaranteed I guess? Same with porting it to pc. Lots of pc owners have systems so how many more copies would they sell. They also don't want to put ANY resources into preventing people from cheating (and players are already complaining about ps players having an advantage) I cam only imagine if pc players started running scripts to assist them. EA is not doing anything to combat trolls or anything now. We can get people in trouble for having bad names or for being terrorists but I can't imagine they will allow us to report someone for cheating. If they did who knows if it would be done in any timely manor.. I'd love the PC community to get a game but the PC community is kinda known for having cheaters and its something I really wouldn't want to deal with unless EA had people in place to ban them.
EA doesn't have any exclusivity of the NHL license when it comes to video games. Hell when 2K dropped out they for awhile just made a mobile card game until their license expired. So yes feel free to go ask 2K and all them others just clamoring to make an NHL game. Once they see how much the license costs they more than likely are no longer interested in fighting over a mil or 2 at best people.
Look at NBA 2K series. They literally put the EA NBA series out of commission because they couldn't catch up in terms of quality and sinking in more money in hopes of getting more shares probably wasn't worth it to investors so the NBA series is dormant again.
As @rsandersr47 said the PC version might become riddled with cheaters. There are ones on FIFA that pretty much the CPU plays for you and score every shot they take. There is like another 2 methods and for the most part some cheaters get banned but people still run into them.
