Part of the problem with NHL 23 is that when sticks collide or pass through other players or sticks doesn't seem to adhere to any consistent rules. And the results of what used to be treated as 'incidental contact' are very different from previous games, but again with no clear explanation. Figuring out when stick interact like physical objects and when they are allowed to pass through other objects is an exercise in frustration in NHL 23.
As for the stick of the puck carrier going through bodies while maintaining possession, it definitely happens. Here the player with the puck exposes it completely and the AI skates right into him. But he never loses possession and because his stick doesn't interact with the defender he's left in an unrealistically advantageous position compared to what would have been the case if there stick behaved as a physical object.
Other plays that would have resulted in loss of the puck in previous years due to incidental contact are also now weighted in favor of the offense. Here the stick of the player who's carrying the puck actually moves the defenders stick out of the way with no loss of possession or impact on his ability to shoot.
"But in that play the offensive player is just being strong on the puck" I hear you say. Ok, I can see it on that play. But offensive animations can actually move defenders legs out of the way in completely unrealistic ways. Here the offensive player is behind a defender with his stick between the defender's legs. He somehow not only wins the possession battle against a defender in better position, his shot attempt actually lifts the defenders foot up and out of the way with no effect on the shot.
