Strategies in NHL 23
Are they going to fix strategies in the game so we can go back and edited them like we did in previous games? (picture I’ve provided.)

@Andochiefs Honestly pretty unlikely… they are probably too focused on fixing their big presentation debacle.. I don’t think we’ll see it fixed for a big… if we even do lol
@Andochiefs Like what happened last year with roster sharing… crossplay will likely be left to the last couple days of November before it launches… so it’ll be nearly a month to wait… speculation.. but we’ll see if it’s accurate or not lol
If EA wants to ween out offline players with stupid decisions like this, they're succeeding so far. Cutting even more freedom from an already restricting game mode makes me not want this game ever/ any others in the future that still have these stupid decisions. Players will literally get stuck skating into each other and the priorities instead are removing more freedom from the player.
- @bg0vzeyqov1y Yup 100% they are just alienating the fan base even more.. and still haven’t listened to our feedback about opening up player editing and strategy editing… the plan is to lock us out of these features for some reason…
The coach strategy bug proves how important the ability to change strategies is…
CPU generated prospects having improper attributes that don’t match their height/weight/player type is also another reason why it’s so vital to have the ability to edit players… - @heavydutyrammer My ideal dream would be. If NHL franchise mode was like My GM in NBA2k.
The things you can do and control and view is endless. Franchise users for years: practically begging for more customization
Some decision maker at EA: hey guys, I just thought of something… what if we took away the ability the edit strategies? You know, because you’re not the coach, you’re the GM. The mode is still called Be a GM, right?
Everyone at EA listening to them: Yeah, that sounds good, because I’ve never thought of anything in this game beyond the surface level. I’m sure no one will be upset. That gives me an idea about presentation….
- @kyl_35 What is so discombobulating is that we’ve been asking to edit players further ie height weight etc.. and then they took away the basic editing such play style, position etc.. and completely locked us out.. and for years we’ve been asking for it back.. so we went backwards with that one
And then yes.. they decided to remove our ability to edit strategies.. and they threw in a half fleshed out league settings… which is alright I guess until you create 36 teams and the AHL teams are all bungled up with no way to fix them… list goes on of course.. and it’s even more frustrating when we get in trouble for voicing our frustrations because we have to ask for X for years and years and then they restrict it even more…
I just can’t believe they justified removing edit strategies with the “you’re not the coach” reason, when we edit lines.. hot dog prices… upgrade your toilets.. etc just doesn’t make sense. It’s not an actual reason Not to mention things such as offer sheet compensation not working. You can offer a contract to any restricted free agent and you will not lose any draft picks. You don’t even have to have the required draft picks to make the offer. Completely broken. It worked every year until this year. Can’t even add players to the game that have been playing in the AHL since last year despite having the license to use the AHL teams.
Let’s face it. This game is a tire fire. Any fixes we could hope to get are being put off for cross play integration, because that’s what EA cares about.
They want likes and shares on tik tok. They don’t care about us franchise users who just want a game that works and emulates the sport we watch on tv. Sad but true
- @Andochiefs All they would have to do is buy the IP to EHM / Eastside Hockey Manager. IP probably would cost peanuts and they'd take the GM mode about 20 steps forward.

I’m assuming the strategies update in the lastest patch is only for the fix of how staggered and collapsing is jumbled. Ect

- @Bahamuta Supposedly, but we’ll have to see if it actually fixes or not… lord only knows how often we’ve gotten a patch and it either doesn’t fix it, breaks something else, or does both lol
Still can’t edit strategies because it’s a coaches job, but we can still edit lines which is also a coaches job - @heavydutyrammer I havent played much in the last week since I have been moving, but I did notice that in my custom League which now plays, i have seen a few more of the teams on ice projections for the created teams. I have not checked out my coaching strategies though. Have you checked out the hiring and firing of coaches for line change strategies change?
Just an FYI to everybody.
They claimed in the patch notes that’s they “fixed” the strategies updating when firing and hiring a new coach.
They have not. I tested multiple times last night and you are still stuck with your default coaches strategies when hiring a new coach.
I guess you can just say something is “fixed” nowadays and that’s good enough
You should unlock strategy choice for some very good reason.
1-It may look logical in theory but in reality, since the AI is not that inteligent, depending of the slider a player use, some strategy are simply not execute properly by the cpu player. The CPU player are not moving and placing themself like they realy should. Often, as player, we don't choose the BEST strategy avalable for our player, but we choose a strategy that help our CPU player to not look so bad.
2-Real coach strategy are often base on the capacity of their player and depend of the team they have. A real coach would adapt is strategy depending of the group of player he have. In nhl 23, coach have strategy that they use watever group of player they have. A real coach strategy will evolve with is group.
3-We are limited to change coach because the team finance in nhl 23 is not perfect and money allowed to coaching staff is often not enough to hire good coach, so before forcing player to have to choose the coach they want depending on their strategy, you should upgrade the way we can hire coach. It's very dificult to do anything in the nhl serie if you don't have budget left.
In reality, team often find money to hire good coaching staff when they are avaible, a think that is not present in nhl. In real life, you don't choose a coach by beeing forced to ask him ONLY 3 questions.
The way we hire coach and scout is a 3 or 4 year old system that have not been touch for some time ans should have been revamp and tweak a little.
To force strategy usage by coach, you should upgrade the way we can talk, negociate and sign staff.
- @EA_Aljo Like so many have said… this is why it’s important to unlock strategies for us so we can edit them… also it would be good if the bug was ACTUALLY fixed..
if we aren’t the coach, so we shouldn’t edit strategies, how come we are allowed to edit lines? That’s the coaches job, and like you said before, we aren’t the coach
Also like other have said… coaches are adaptable.. they tweak their strategies based on team performance.. team composition.. the players they have, etc.
Why do we hard-lock ourselves to one single strategy scheme for the entire duration of that coaches career with us? That’s not how teams are built…
This, along with the ability to edit players, is so important… especially when things are always broken and not working properly anyways…

Surprise surprise lol.. this is brutal…
wonder what the chances are of it getting fixed for the mid November update
Another problem is the hiring system of nhl.
The date at wich you can hire coach is not that clear in the game.
Then, you can ask 3 questions to a coach and then, you have to guest if your contending level, market, salary and fanbase fit with is preference, make an offer, pass 3 or 4 day and when he refuse, 2 or 3 other coach that you may want top have for your team sign with other team and sudently, no good coach are avalaible.
That mini game make coach signing almost like a lucky guest...that had to much impact now on your team for such system. The futur of you entire season and fun as player depend on a mini game that don't give you a lot of option and that don't make that mnuch on a sense.
It was ok before because you could almost ignore it if you din't like it, but now, that mini think who don't work to well is one of the most important think in your franchise and if your owner don't give you the right budget and you don't guest the coach expectation, your done.
You could replace all this with a "roll your random team strategy" button and it would be almost the same. No sense at all.

@EA_Aljo Yes. Started a new franchise after the update and everything. Hired a new coach from the coaching hires menu, simmed a few days to see if it would take hold. Nothing. Simmed a whole season to see if it would take hold. Nothing. Still stuck with my default coaches strategies. And no, it is not a similar temples to my default coach. I had an offensive coach and hired the most defensive coach I could find.
This is why WE are frustrated. We waited a month for a patch. We were told this was fixed. Do these fixes even get tested before they go out? It took me five minutes total to test this and find out the “fix” wasn’t working. I guess I just don’t get how they can claim something is “fixed” without it actually being fixed.
Now we could possibly waiting another month for this be fixed on top of the fact that we already waited a month. I understand you guys are issuing bans, I just received a 24 hour myself. But how can you not understand our frustration? I mean even you have to admit this is getting ridiculous at this point.
WE waited a month for a fix. We’re told it was fixed. And yet it is clearly not. I guess WE would really all just like to know what lead the devs to believe this was fixed? Because as I said, a five minute play test showed that it was not. Look, I can get past not being able to change a coaches strategies. I understand the logic I really do. But please at least make coaches and strategies matter then.- EA_Aljo
Do you have any screenshots or a video? We just haven't been able to reproduce this yet.
Everyone on this forum is able to replicate it with their game. I am a member of a couple of other message boards besides this one and everyone on those forums are confirming it’s not working as well. I literally haven’t seen one person say it is working out of the 8 or 9 who have tested it.
I am not technologically advanced to do the whole “screen shot” thing so maybe someone else can help out on this one.
Maybe the devs should try replicating it on a retail copy of the game, because that is what most of us are using.
