I used to play HUT exclusively, but that is a ridiculous hellhole, it took me too long to realize that. I tried all the offline modes with the trial, the AI makes those modes unplayable, I can easily dominate the AI every time on superstar with max difficulty adjustment in franchise mode, or shatter Gretzky's scoring records without much effort in Be a pro.
World of Chel is the "least horrible" game mode, but at higher levels even that is a cesspool of LT abuse, figure skating, and boring trap on trap gameplay with no forechecking or physical play. This game is not hockey, not even close.
