Its impossible to do this when poke checks don't work and people can pass through for the one tee anyways. People just set up the same shot every time and you can't do anything about it. We could have three people on the goal line and they still get the passes through it makes no sense. The game is severely broken and I don't see how it couldn't be fixed in 23 if you just had people look into it. You guys spend way too much time focusing on HUT and not enough time focusing on game glitches that haven't been fixed for months.
I play defense primarily in WoC. Normally, with an AI D partner. I haven't had a problem stopping cross-crease passes and using poke checks to break up plays. I've also seen other teams defend our attempts at those shots as well as land successful poke checks. Again, if you're seeing a team set up the same shot over and over again, you already know what they're going to do. Being able to recognize this and anticipate when it's going to happen will help your club get in better position to stop these shots.
This isn't saying the game is perfect by any means. I'm pretty frustrated with defending the same meta play over and over again, but what you're describing can be defended. You even mention that other teams are scoring on you, but you're not able to score on them. This sounds like your opponents are finding gaps in your defense and are exploiting that.

dude u literally work for EA you have the power to fix the exploits if I have three players all trying to intercept the pass then its not a problem with our defense its a problem with the way passes are able to get by so easily

I'm not a developer. It's not something I can do anything about.
Can you get me some video so I can see why myself, my opponents, along with your opponents are able to defend this, but your team is having trouble with it? I'll review it for any issues.

AI goalies give up close quarters goals legit I would say 90% of the time. If you have close quarters, skate in close and shoot (it doesn't seem to matter which side) the puck is in the back of the net. It's one of the reasons I stopped playing this game already.
- TTZ_Dipsy3 years agoLegend
You don't even need Close Quarters this year - Heck, you don't even need to deke or shoot, the puck will always find its way to the back of the net
- CapeBretonIslndr3 years agoNew Vanguard@TTZ_Dipsy Just like hitting, goal scoring is that simple. Defending and goaltending, "what are they?" (Ace Ventura quote).

Word of advice aljo, you always come off demeaning because you say something like "well I didn't have any problem getting this and that to work right" but you rarely offer clear insight to how it's supposed to work out how to properly do something in game control wise. You speak directly to the dev team. You know how things are supposed to work as opposed to how a customer feels or thinks they should work, and without clarification and insight into what you know, most times you come off as kind of a * man. Just being real with you.
No joke. Go read Twitter or reddit. People legit think you're not helpful and just downright rude. I'm not saying this to harp on you but instead to show you why there is animosity. You're perceived as a pretentious know it all who constantly trips on his own ego. Please don't axe me. This is legit constructive feedback on our interactions with you as an EA employee, and I'm telling you that you come off unprofessional and rude to many people. Hope this helps. Honestly.

It's blatantly obvious when you compare it to how other mods and CM's speak.

- KlariskraysNHL2 years agoHero+@Kmahrle83 Pretty sure Dave is the one that came off as the bad one assuming he should just fix it he works for EA. It's not his fault people can't read that it says Community Manager and not Developer. He's relayed information left and right from people and it's this community that expects changes to happen just because he does that. Can't blame him for things not changing because that isn't his job. I mean they could replace him but if you think someone else is gonna do a better job then you live in Candyland. He'd be better off no longer interacting with any of us and just posting news when it is needed.
But hell I love this community for the laughs. Goalies are too tough... Goalies are terrible.... Pokechecks are OP.... Pokechecks are useless. HItting is overpwoered..... Hitting doesn't work. Makes you wonder who is just bad at the game and refuses to accept it.
Don't axe me bro this is just the truth - TTZ_Dipsy2 years agoLegend
If a proper poll was to be made, I have no doubts the numbers would be split 50/50.
Would love to compare the answers with team records though... I can't help but think the majority of teams calling goalies good have more losses than wins; Don't get me wrong, the game could be better but it gets to a point where you can't blame it for the problems some of these players are facing.

It's no real surprise there's a mix of opinions on goalies. How effective they are is really a mixed bag.
They're a bit too effective against certain cross-ice passing plays. When these plays trigger a "desperation save" animation they result in saves more often then the probably should. Goalies also seem to be less impacted by screens than they should be. A bit too many "can't see the puck, but makes an easy glove save" plays happen. ( As an aside, is it me or are defending players screening their own goalie more "effective" than offensive players setting up the same screen? )
On the other hand goalies are absolutely useless at certain aspects of the game. Breakaways/penalty shots are almost a guaranteed goal. And yes, they should be high-percentage chances but I'd like to see players actually need to make a smart move to beat the goalie rather than just be able to skate a straight line and shoot forehand every time.
The two most egregious issues though are the extreme-angle short-side shots that goalies just can't handle and also goalies knocking pucks into their own net when trying to cover a loose puck. Of the two the short-side problem is the biggest one for me. It basically forces defenders to be much more aggressive against offensive players in what should be completely non-dangerous positions because you have to worry that a shot from there is going to beat the goalie when it never should. This opens up other, actual high-danger plays because defenders get pulled out of position.

The team is aware of these 2 goals you've mentioned. The extreme angle short-side and goalies knocking the puck into their own net. Hopefully, we see these improved in the future. They're definitely very frustrating.
I have had to play more aggressive this year. Better to take away the opportunity than give them time to get a shot on net. The downside is that this can lead to a lack of coverage that let teams set up good scoring chances
- KlariskraysNHL2 years agoHero+@EA_Aljo I personally think making the defender have to do more is the better option. Let's be honest if they shore up the short side shot even more that goalie is getting toasted far side unless they making goalies godlike in side to side movement.
Then i truly believe you need a center who can read a play and know where and how to cover for a defender. - EA_Aljo2 years ago

Then i truly believe you need a center who can read a play and know where and how to cover for a defender.Agreed with your comment about having a good center. Which, I do. He's more defensive minded than offense and makes for a great backup defender since I am playing more aggressively at times. It also depends how your opponents are playing though. Within the first period we can determine their go-to plays and better anticipate what they're going to do. Your goalie is your last line of defense. We try to have their job be as easy as possible. Chances are good that when a goal is scored against us, it's due to a break down in defense more than an issue with the goalie. Of course, goalies could use improving though. I'm definitely not saying they're fine.
The last several years we've had complaints about the short side. I always said if we make this harder, it's going to be easier to score on the far side. Hopefully, we can find a good balance so neither are exploited. Both are good ways to score in the real world. I'd like to see that better implemented in our game as well, but there most likely will always be goals that are easier to score than others. Which then just continues the cycle of teams setting up for the same shot over and over again. Thankfully, that means those teams are easier to defend against. The truly challenging ones are teams that have amazing chemistry and know how to set up good plays.

When I played Junior these shots were common, especially blocker side since it's their weaker end. Although that might be the goalie would adjust their play and cover those common areas. The opposing team would then have to setup by cycling the puck looking for a reasonable shot on net. In these games it was more defensive than offensive since the physicality added to the gameplay. As a D-man the job was to drive the opposing players to the outside laying them out before entering the zone. Strong-side D-men went for the check, while the weak-side covered the middle of the ice driving the right side opponents to the outside also. Goalies at a competitive level knew how to position properly and would stop the same shot if it was repeated numerous times. NHL 23 the goalies don't adapt and let in weak goals. It was costly for a GWC competitor to lose out based off a goal that bounced off the boards and went into the net when the goalie was staring right at it. Waiting for NHL 24 to fix things is too long of a way giving the current product is unacceptable for what we paid full for. Need to fix it or give us compensation to match the quality.
- KlariskraysNHL2 years agoHero+@EA_Aljo Something I see happen again will be the whip shot coming back if the short side is made very hard to score on. Or we could see the move of the pull back and fast shot far side since the move brings the puck in closer and behind the skater which would pull the goalie more. I mean it's just common when you see them fix one area that you know another is opening up instantly.
I don't think AI is far enough along in the game to be truly sporadic where it would possibly play the same movement differently.
Only solution I ever had for changing up goalies was to get rid of the set animations for goalies and give each limb a range of movement to cover and how well it can be covered. There should be real life data that could help with that too.
Also something that is huge to me is that aiming for corners just don't miss the net enough. I truly want to be able to just miss the net aiming for a snipe shot. I rock like 76-78 accuracy and the amount of times I can place the puck in great areas just shouldn't happen. So the shooting aspect also needs a rework. - EA_Aljo2 years ago

Thanks for all the feedback. For sure appreciate it!
The problem with having goalies adapt is that if a team goes for the same shot over and over again, it probably means they're going to be more prepared for that shot. All a team needs to do then is change up their play and have an easier chance scoring differently. For example, if they spend all game going far side and in the 3rd go for the short side, it might be something to be exploited. However, it's also on the opposing players to recognize this and adapt. Regardless, goalies are incredibly complex. I understand they have their faults, but making them behave completely like a real human is probably not going to happen anytime soon. I imagine there's always going to be higher percentage ways to score.

This problem can be solved by setting different behavior for goalkeepers.
Last year we had one behavior that can be transferred to the nhl 23.
MARC-ANDRE FLEURY (ALL OR NOTHING) had his own behavior when he was thrown out, played extremely aggressively.
MIKE SMITH has his own behavior.
Probably, there are still special behaviors.
In total, having a list of different behaviors that can be included randomly, yes, there may be frosted goals in each match, but there may be more different goals over a long distance.
You can give the opportunity to change the setup strategies for the goalkeeper in the menu, ask him to play aggressively, or keep the short side.
In addition, it is necessary to refine the poke check goalie animations. Now he's just poking in the air, if, like skaters, there would be an auto aim on pack, the goalkeeper would be able to prevent many of the same close goals - EA_Aljo2 years ago

Thanks for the input. I know we've had requests in the past to be able to do some customization to your AI players. I'll pass on the feedback.
- KlariskraysNHL2 years agoHero+@bruanor09 Here is the thing with giving goalies behavior. There will be like 3 methods people try to see which one someone is using then after the 1st period they exploit it. Smart players know to do things like this just like they would figuring out how a team tries to defend.
When coming up with ideas you got to think how would a "sweat player" go about it. If it's easily figured out then it probably isn't something investing the effort into. I mean cause most of these fixes people want are because of that type of player.
