Programming Stupidity: Goalies and Defensemen of NHL 25

https://www.xbox.com/play/media/7We5J4bMKk

In this clip from Pro-AM, I make a save on a shot from in tight. After the save, I want to be able to slide over to seal off the post while being in butterfly/RVH. Instead, the game forces my goalie into a desperation animation, leaving my goalie stuck on his side, on a play where the puck was moving into a safe area and out of harm's way.

After the shot, the same skater collects his rebound and goes behind the net where a defender (CPU) follows him. In front, a second defender (CPU) completely abandons his man and obvious recipient of a pass in order to skate straight into my goalie, covering nobody, and further taking me out of the play. The pass is made, the shot is taken at a wide open net, and a I'm stuck swimming in semi-dry concrete trying to get back into position to no avail.

It genuinely boggles my mind how the mid development team that put this horrendous game together could actually play this game for any length of time at all and think, "nailed it."

The AI in this game is as stupid as ever, making absolutely baffling decisions that would get you kicked off a BEER LEAGUE team.

This game is boring, tedious, and is yet another in a long list of failures from EA. But, most importantly, this game will also be the last NHL game that I ever spend a single cent on as I cannot possibly think of a bigger waste of time and money.

Maybe I can still find an Xbox 360 and a copy of NHL 2K on ebay. 🤞

  • Disagree with most of your post because I find this game pretty fun and refreshing aside from a few issues BUT... I will agree that if you're playing AS THE GOALIE, the game should NEVER force you into desparation saves. That should be on YOU to control.

So, what are your thoughts on the AI's decision making in the clip? Because, from where I'm standing, defenders abandoning their man to run into their own goalie is probably not great.

In this clip, the defense just seems very confused.

The puck carrier passes to the man in front who then peels off to the corner/boards while the original puck carrier sets up shop at the side of the net. The defender in front can't decide whether to protect the net or skate with the new puck carrier.

The first defender eventually decides to cover the puck carrier and abandon the net front. A second defender then skates in and completely ignores the offensive player in front of the net and skates right into the goalie.

The puck carrier passes to me and I shoot a one timer short side that easily beats the goalie who is being interfered with by his own defender.

If this is enhanced AI, I don't think the world needs to worry about skynet taking over.

It was an issue in 24 that has made its way to 25.  If the puck is blocked in any way the goalies freak out like their jersey is on fire and they have to snuff it out.  I've asked in a few posts to increase the threshold for goalies to "panic".  Didn't realize it was forced on human goalies too.  That should ALWAYS be a player choice.

They make Goalie difficult and unplayable because they want you to quit and go play HUT where microtransactions. The same reason menus are laggy in CHEL and why customization is a pain in the **bleep** .all designed to lead you to HUT.

  • Also will be my last game, I only play defense and I’m tired of these little speed skaters.
