Nobody is forcing you to buy packs. You can make a competitive enough team just by grinding and completing the objectives.
I don't particularly like the new XP path. I don't think its fair for the casual players. Most of that player base won't get anywhere near level 60.
Tbf they have made the hut moments a lot easier to complete this year, which gives out some good rewards.
