AI scores consistently in the last minute of period

I've only been playing NHL20 since December, and its my first since NHL12 (no console for many years), but what is the deal with the AI scoring in the last minute of a period in nearly every game I play in Squad Battles?

No matter what the rating of the opposing AI, somehow some way, they seem to get these amazingly lucky bounces, the puck miraculously lands on their blade, my passes from my usually rock solid defenders bounce off a skate and go right to the opposition, and then seemingly my goalie decides he's more interested at looking at butterflies instead of stopping the puck.

It has become comical, because when this happens, I almost can't look at the game clock because it is 99 percent of the time with under a minute left in the period. They never seem to score at any other times.

@EA_Aljo, what is the deal with this? I'm not calling it ice tilt, but is it some sort of weird momentum mechanism? Seriously, I am usually destroying the opposition and then boom, last minute, shutout gone. Super frustrating.

The AI fights harder when they're down. Especially in the last few minutes. They take more chances and attack the puck harder. The last minute of the game is also in real-time so it's longer than a normal game minute. They will be pretty relentless about quick passes and taking advantage of open lanes. You have to play very defensively and stay in position. I like to clog the front of the net and wait for them to take a shot that is frequently blocked, then carefully break out because a turnover usually means your players are now out of position from transitioning to offense.

My team is almost always set to be as aggro as possible, it would kinda throw things off if they were still able to do more outside of our strategy.

Whether it's are programed or not, I have to agree there are a ton of extra goals in the dying last minutes - when in doubt just pepper the goalie with weak shots and one'll most likely go in. I don't really notice the ai scoring more than humans though; it's fairly even on that front

@EA_Aljo OK, I can accept that they are taking more chances and more shots because time is waning, but what then what about my team's AI? They seem to play poorly in these same situations as well.

I had my Icon Lemieux completely miss a clearing shot with 5 seconds left while no one was around him, only to have the opposing fwd swoop in to take the puck and whip it right through Bishop's legs....

There seem to be many situations where my team, even though it is usually higher rated and more synergies active will completely skate past a pass or my defender seemingly moves himself out of position.

Still talking about the final moments of the period here. I feel like the game is dumbing down my players while boosting the opposition higher than their rating.  I've seen 70 rated player cards play like 90 rated cards in these moments.

By the way, thanks for the quick feedback.

Lower rated teams are not boosted. I can't stress this enough.

You can change the strategies your AI use in the last few minutes of the game. If you have them set to be more offensive, try changing to Collapsing and Protect net. Don't chase the puck. Clog the front of the net and wait for the AI to take a shot that becomes a turnover for you.

I don't know why your Lemieux couldn't clear the puck. I'd have to see video of that.
