I can assure you the dev team plays the game. It's one of the reasons why you see defenders putting the puck in their net far less than they used to. They can't skate it into their own net anymore, but the puck can deflect off them. I have seen some very uncommon occurrences where a defender tries a pick-up and they push the puck into their net. The dev team is always trying to make that happen less.

What mode are you seeing it in specifically? If EASHL, try setting your defensive strategies so they are more aggressive. This will help them get rid of the puck faster instead of skate around with it more. Once in a while they can skate into the goalie which knocks the puck loose and unfortunately into their own net. Obviously, when they're looking to get rid of the puck sooner, the chance of that happening is lessened. I've played a few hundred EASHL games of 20 and have seen own goals from defenders only a couple of times. Granted, I also play defense so I have to be wary of my AI partner, if I have one, and be there as a pass option. If you're playing as a forward and just go screaming up the ice expecting them to pass, chances are good they won't unless you have an open lane. So, they'll skate around with the puck until a lane opens up. Which is why I always set myself up as an option when passing lanes for forwards are blocked. Between using aggressive strategies and providing good passing lanes, you'll see far fewer own goals.

Once again though, video is key. I totally understand the frustration and we definitely want to improve the game, but we need video and specific feedback to know what you're experiencing.

the puck hit the left side of the net on the metal frame the goalie moved his pad, so the puck was behind the goalies pad pressed against the metal frame, the computer went over and started poking the puck until he scored against his own team.

we lost in ot because of this..

played again and the same hing happened in the 1st period..

and it has happened several times after that also.

I have put over 500 hours of gameplay in on nhl 19, but nhl20 is so bad I just uninstalled it and gave up all together..

another major issue that has caused a major amount of hand pain, is your algorithm moves my player automatically, causing goal ofter goal when I play threes online.

I always play defence, there will be a breakaway with 2 players skating towards our net.

I will be skating backwards directly in the center of the 2 players, then I will move left to hit the guy with the puck.

and the game will force my movement right instead... 

so my thumb-stick is pressed left, but my player skates right allowing for an easy goal.. 

and this happens in every game online several times.

I started just letting go of the thumbs-tick because my hand was so wrecked from fighting it..

and it happened regularly in nhl20 even on a new xbox one x with brand new controller.

almost like their is auto hitting..

so the algorithm is taking over my player and skating towards the player without the puck, allowing the player on the left with the puck to easily score.
