Oh my bad, I getcha now.
I always just assumed matchmaking was only based off of location with parameters widening over time - it's possible NHL has gone the same route as other games and tries matching only groups together - it's not a perfect science by any means (usually leads to imbalanced numbers), but is an easy way to get faster matches. 

Just to be clear, you're going in as a random team and not entering as a club (this'll give you a mascot partner)? Weird thing to ask but it has happened before.

    We're not aware of anything that would specifically cause this. It seems like a coincidence, but it's definitely curious that it's happening every time. It's possible there just isn't someone available at that moment to fill the 3rd spot.
