Are you trying to play the PS5 version of the game? PS5 allows you to use PS4 controllers when playing playing PS4 versions of games so I think that's why it worked in 21.
PS5 versions of games require DualSense controllers iirc (there is some internal check and its also why they can but out on PC) so you'll either need to boot up the last gen version of NHL or find a way to pair your software with the new controller.

*Had to edit a big post I made as I just noticed you said your setup has worked with other PS5 titles before. If the option to purchase PS4 or PS5 versions aren't in your console's store, you should be able to check via the website on PC. If you purchased the X-Factor edition, you can scroll over your game tile in the xmb and press the options button - there should be a "game version" tab
Hopefully, @EA_Blueberry has some insight? - EA_Blueberry4 years ago

Hey, @IronMoogle
Thanks for flagging this down and appreciate the tag, @TTZ_Dipsy
Did you purchase the X-Factor edition? I'm curious if the game is able to work with the controller on the PS4 version of the game if that is loaded up from the games library (highlight the game and under options from the 3 dots you can launch the PS4 version).
We'll want to know these details when passed along to the team to verify if it's impacting both versions or a specific one.- 4 years ago
Thanks for responding @EA_Blueberry @TTZ_Dipsy
I just checked and it says NHL 22 X-Factor edition. Did I purchase the wrong one?

One quick edit: if I click on view product, it says X factor edition. but the media bar at the top just looks like normal NHL 22. Here's an image:

@IronMoogle
It looks like the standard. You should have an option to download/launch the PS4 version of the game if you have the X-Factor Edition because it comes with Dual Entitlement. Your purchase history should should show the correct version. You may want to reach out to PlayStation Support to verify your account was given the proper game version access.
We'll share your request about this to the team. What I recommend doing on top of this is posting in the Accessibility forums so our Accessibility team can get eyes around this.https://answers.ea.com/t5/Accessibility/ct-p/accessibility-en
We also have our accessibility portal where you can personally reach out to our Accessibility team to raise any concerns like this and other requests to make our games easier.
