    Yes, Xbox users do need an active XBL Gold subscription to play online.

I seem to be having this issue as well with BF3, Borderlands 3 does not do this. Deleting saved data and reloading fresh did not resolve this issue.
This is on an Xbox one using the xbox 360 app to play Battlefield 3.
