I know this is starting to get repetitive, but are the servers still up? I just bought the game today and am having the same problems reported here. I followed the steps listed, including starting a support chat, but the fellow I was chatting with said the servers have been "sunset" for a long time and that there are no online features.

That's not true. The Spore servers are all still active, I myself had upload some creations just a few days ago.
