What's the point in car upgrades in career mode?

After finishing the story mode, I started playing career.

Playing on Legend AI difficulity, I found out that upgrading your cars is actually a counterproductive thing to do.

I'm in rookie touring, racing with TC-2 cars on Bathurst.

My fully upgraded Golf GTI can clock laptimes of 2:07 and I can't even dream of getting 1st or 2nd, bots are just too fast on the straights. Even gear ratios and slipstream do not help against it, they just drive away.

Then I swapped to an unupgraded Subaru, that can clock laptimes of 2:17 (so 10 seconds slower than the Golf) and I have no problems with chasing down the same bots on the straights, got my 1st place in the first try.

Seems like if you have upgraded cars, bots get better upgrades than you do, which makes upgrades useless.

The same thing happened with rookie GT, where I couldn't do anything in upgraded Aston, but unupgraded 911 just stearolled everyone on Okutama and San Francisco.

I'd like to hear your experience with upgrades, maybe on other difficulity levels it does make sense? On Legend it's just pointless.

  • I think upgrades are a bad idea overall. In both online and career. In online races you need cars with the same powerlevel for exciting races. Now you have two classes within a class : upgraded and not upgraded cars.

  • I think upgrades as an idea are fine, but the way they're implemented in the game is not interesting at all.

Grid 2 had the best upgrade system. It needed commitment (upgrades were expensive, you needed to grind money) and it gave you choice on what to upgrade.

It was nice to experiment with different upgrade builds to find out which one you like the best.

Legends have few different upgrades per level, but it's pointless, because you buy them all after unlocking the level after all.

Could as well be just a single button  for each level, instead of 5.

Also, spending your money for upgrades in career just to find out that you are SLOWER (compared to AI) is kinda laughable.

Right now, the only point of upgrades is locking you from those last 'full upgarde' races - you can't compete unless you grind and upgrade your car fully.
