Re: Performance option for console versions?

The following question and answer from the link below makes me more worried that consoles won't have an option other than 30 Hz ☹️. I really hope this doesn't turn out to be the case as it would be a huge let down.

OS: As we understand it, consoles will be capped at 30FPS. Will the PC version be uncapped or allow 60FPS?

CP: That’s correct regarding consoles at 30 FPS. And YES… PC has options for 30FPS, 60FPS, and unlocked framerate.

    @Ultrasonic_77That's a bummer. It's also quite a shame with the latest Frostbite engine and with the new generation consoles supporting well over 30 frames. I have the series s, I would love to have 1440p at 60 or 90 FPS. Hopefully soon after post launch there may be an upgrade.

    Makes you wonder why they just made this for next gen consoles only, when it's going to run 1080p at 30🤔

    For what it's worth I believe it's going to be 4k @30 Hz but not the right trade off for me as discussed above.

    Even so, this still could run on Xbox One or PS4, performance-wise frame rate and resolution, and if you're playing a console with a monitor like I am, there's a lot of people that aren't going to spend the money for a 4K monitor.  TV surely.

    @Ultrasonic_77 Just read that at Operation Sports, Ultra, and was on my way to share it here. Well, I must say I'm bummed to hear it, although I had already mostly conditioned myself to accept it. My hope now is that my i5-4440, Geforce GTX 1070 8GB, 16 GB RAM will be able to get me 60 FPS at 1080p. I Must say I'm less hopeful that even that will be achievable now, but it's hard to sort out the recommended specs on PC games. My CPU comes in a little under recommended spec, but my graphics card is two notches up the ladder from recommended, so who knows.

    At least I'll have some customizing options available to me with the PC version, so this interview that was published at OS helped me make my purchase decision.

    @64mamaluke I'm pretty sure that it's going to be 4K @ 30 FPS, but 30 FPS is still 30 FPS no matter what resolution it's in. I'm with you though... a next-gen sports game at 30 FPS? That's a head scratcher for me!?

    @64mamaluke I can understand them wanting to present the game in 4K resolution for eye appeal. That's no doubt going to net some sales they probably wouldn't have gotten otherwise. What I don't understand is why is it so hard to at least offer an OPTION to change the resolution down to something that's going to allow the game to run at 60 FPS? Let the game default to 4K @ 30 FPS. Those who aren't going to notice the difference will settle for that and you'll never hear another peep out of them. On the other hand, those who want the 60 FPS option at the expense of graphics fidelity are going to be more than willing to go into an options menu and select the 1080p/60 FPS option. It's been done in lots of other EA Sports games, why not here?

    I would still hold off and not pre-order. Not sure if you were or not. I can almost validate a pre order if they offered the game at a discounted price, or some other feasible offers.  Me personally, I'm going to wait out the 6 weeks and see what we have, reviews, options, gameplay, multiplayer, etc.

    If as seems likely the game will launch at 30 Hz only then I suppose it's always possible that a performance mode could be added later on. It must be possible to make changes to facilitate this.

    @Ultrasonic_77 It just seems strange to delay a game a full year, put it on next-gen consoles only, and have it run capped at 30. This game must have some stellar demanding graphics to only run at 30 Hertz. Maybe it's all the lidar lasers and helicopters they use to count every blade of grass I'm not sure.

    As I've said above I think one major factor is ray tracing. 

    I wonder if there's any chance that the game physics really has advanced to the point that the last gen CPUs would have struggled?

    @Ultrasonic_77 I agree, I'm just talking simply frames and resolution. Not sure how much ray tracing is going to impact a golf game, maybe water and sunlight. It still don't justify 30 frames. There is a ton of graphically demanding games that can run at 60 or above. Hopefully they can add that settings options and the graphics menu.

    In the end though if the gameplay is good, multiplayer is good, it looks good, and runs well, that's all we can hope for at launch.

    @64mamaluke Yeah, I won't preorder... if I'm backed into buying the PC version, I'll just buy it on Steam on launch day. We might know a little more about it by then and I'll be able to make a more informed decision at that time.

    @Ultrasonic_77 There's a precedent for that to happen. 2K released an update about six months after the launch of PGA TOUR 2K21 to add a 60 Hz vsync option to that game, and it was a game changer for me.

    Ironically, if that happens with EA Sports PGA TOUR, I'll probably be coerced into doing the same thing with EA's game that I did with 2K's PGA TOUR 2K23... buying both versions because one has frame rate advantages over the other. Although in this case, I'll be buying the PC version first. PGA TOUR 2K23 has a performance option on the Series X, but it doesn't strip enough graphics detail to deliver a smooth enough performance for my tastes. I can get a satisfying performance level on the pc version of 2K23 at 1080p, however. My scoring average shows it... my handicap is 7.8 strokes lower on the PC version.

    True. It was experiencing the change this brought that makes me seriously disappointed if EA PGA Tour won't be able to do the same. This being a post-launch update for 2k21 makes more sense as this was much earlier in the current-gen lifecycle, where such updates were much more the norm. I honestly find it much harder to justify on a current-gen only release in 2023. 

    I suspect there's pretty widespread disappointment in this revelation. YouTuber GamerAbility released a video essentially to highlight the console frame-rate problem yesterday, with the video basically just going through the article above but adding his thoughts. I've not gone hunting through various social media but I bet this will not be a popular announcement in general which really does feel to me like it will negatively affect sales if not addressed.

    @Ultrasonic_77 Good find. I'm glad that video is out there having a greater, bigger, voice to developers of the disappointment and him calling it " a deal breaker " because of the graphical limitations on the next gen consoles. Hopefully that will be seen and heard and changes can be made shortly after launch rather than much later.

    @Ultrasonic_77 WOW... what a great video... this guy is one of us! I'm comforted to know that there's someone else who's more devastated over the 30 FPS cap than me! He did a great job with all of the OS questions though and gave what I thought was a very objective breakdown, backed by video, on all of them. I'm now a Gamer Ability subscriber. Thanks for sharing that here brother!

    I simply won't buy games that don't run at 60fps in 2023.

    Sounds melodramatic but 30fps gives me a headache. Lower the res and give me 60fps. Almost no one (on console) is sitting close enough to see the difference between 4K and 1440 or even 1080 anyway so to prioritise that over gameplay affecting things like framerate is mad.

    I was excited for this but it's gone from must buy to avoid.

    @64mamaluke I heard him say deal breaker and thought... hey, he's just reinforcing my decision to go with the PC version because at 30 FPS, it will be a deal breaker for me on my Series X. I don't quite understand the limiting of options on console versions of some games versus PCs. I know it's impractical to expect the console version to not have a Geforce Experience type utility to tailor graphics and settings with, but if a game like Elite Dangerous can provide four possible combinations for performance/quality selections, why not a golf game on a next generation console?

    @remjohn You got me thinking, with all this talk about FPS, what exactly is the resolution going to be set at for the Xbox Series S which can natively do 1440p up to 120fps? If we're talking 30 FPS at 4K for the series x am I to believe it's going to be 30 frames at 1440p for the Series S? Because both of those are maxed out resolutions for each console natively. This is why it's so baffling not to have adjustable configurations of graphical performance settings. I should be able to get 60 frames at 1080p on the S. I don't know 😱

    I know what you mean in that once you've got used to normally playing at 60 Hz + the drop to 30 Hz can look pretty bad. It would be interesting to know what proportion of 2k21/23 players on current gen consoles choose to play at 60 Hz but my guess is it's the significant majority.

    A significant factor will be whether they try to use any ray tracing on Series S or not.

    I’m not sure how much the visuals rely on ray tracing but I don’t recall any game that can run it at 60fps. Is it possible the visuals take a massive hit with RT off.

    @gasman1 Good question gasman1, but I'm not up on ray tracing anywhere near the degree needed to answer your question. With so many AAA games now offering quality/performance options, I'm shocked that this one missed the boat. I just can't imagine that it would look bad enough in whatever settings they'd have to lower it to achieve 60 FPS.

    Look at what 2K did with PGA TOUR 2K23... it's got a performance/quality setting in it and I honestly can't name one person I've heard of who plays that game in Quality mode, where it's a slideshow. Even in its performance mode, it feels like it's having trouble hitting 60 FPS, let alone sustaining it, but it's a lot more playable than it is in quality mode... and honestly, it doesn't look like it takes much of a graphics hit in its performance mode.
