Today, Fri. 2/20/15, I am having many more disconnects or the app closing than usual. It seems much more likely to stop when accessing global market from another city than my home city.

Same thing happens for me. Usually it'll crash maybe every 20th time I click the trade HQ but as of today it's probably every 5th time. I'm on a Moto X first gen
Hey EA, when you want to fix this issue? ? The game is crashing constantly when browsing Global Market.. It seems that every Android user has this problem! Is it so hard for you to create a stable game? Are you okay with it?? I didn't hear any response from EA on this matter.. Please give us at least some response, are you working on a fix or what?? Thanks

Here is a small trick that keeps Global Trade going longer before crashing.
When you have gone to another city and opened and closed their Trade Depot, you move the screen to get their Global in view, and you tap it for a city list. Ok. If you close that panel without visiting another city, you remain in the same city and the Global is right there and easy to tap. BEFORE you tap the Global again to see a new city list, DRAG THE VIEW. You might notice a small hesitation when you start to drag the view. (If you wait a few seconds before doing the drag, you won't see the hesitation.)
Moving the view seems to cause the game to properly clean up after the city list. If you don't move the view, but simply tap the Global, and then close the panel, tap the Global, close the panel, etc, you will eventually Crash the game.
At least that's been my experience on a Galaxy Note 2. My crash rate has gone down significantly by moving the view a little after each listing.
It's possible that simply waiting a few seconds before tapping the Global again will allow the game time to do cleanup. I haven't bothered to test that because it's easy to move the view, but waiting does avoid seeing hesitation when the drag starts.
Beware that even with greatly reduced crashing, Global Trade is a myth. The game seems to intentionally filter out the items I need most. No matter what items I need "right now" I almost never see any of them. (Maybe every sixth panel listing is a better mix, but still not what I need the most, and when I do see someting and visit that city, my most important goal is usually unavailable.)
We are apparently allowed to acquire a few items per day that we need using the Trade Center, and are otherwise expected to pay cash to keep playing.
EA: Real players don't pay to win. That's not winning, it's cheating. It doesn't require thought or planning or skill of any kind to pay to rush through the game. The company needs to make a profit, of course. Servers and staff aren't free. So sell subscriptions. One free hour per week.
I would pay to play, but I will not pay to progress.
