There are ads in Simcity BuildIt that do offer one of 3 crates for an item. The ads will appear over your lots in the form of a speech bubble with a video icon so keep an eye out for those. You'll have the option to watch and choose one out of 3 possible crates or you can cancel the ad and not watch it but you'll also cancel the crate drops after. I've found them to be easy ways to pick up things especially when starting out. 🙂
