I have just returned to my iPad after an absence of about 30 minutes, reloaded the game and it has reverted to the end position of the previous mayors’ challenge. I have lost all the work I have done on the current challenge. How do I get my game back?

On AHQ we can help with tips and tricks but we don't have access to your account data to see what happened. You would need to contact support for further assistance with that matter. To do so, launch the game and go to Settings > Help> Contact us button (more info here)
