The amount of tax you collect is calculated by several factors dependent on how high your population is but also how happy they are. Taxes are automatically calculated for you, there's no need for you to make adjustments. This article explains more about taxes and information on your other government buildings.

"Income" shows how much tax you’ll collect over a 24-hour (real-time) period. That means that if you tap on City Hall at the same time of day tomorrow (without visiting it between now and then) the "Income" is the total amount of Simoleons you will receive. But joy! You don’t have to wait a whole day if your Simoleons levels are low. Taxes build up gradually over the course of the day, so you can pick up smaller amounts at regular intervals, any time you see the Simoleon icon above City Hall. There’s no penalty for doing it this way – you still get the same total of Simoleons.

Please note - the figure of 20% tax is calculated from levels and ratios for happiness and population, it's not as simple as happiness multiplied by population! A 20% tax rate is not simply 20% of your total population number in Simoleon form. If it were this simple an equation, early level Mayors would receive barely anything and find it a real struggle to make money for a long time, whereas higher level Mayors could buy everything in sight and would dominate the Markets. We didn't think this was very fair, particularly for a free-to-play game, and the balance of the game would have suffered too much.

As this fairer tax calculation is a curve rather than a straight line (as explained above), the taxation amount will start to even out at higher levels of the game, and you won't notice such a dynamic increase as at the earlier levels. Eventually you may reach a taxation limit.
