I can agree with some of your points and lucky for us there is no wrong way to play this game.
I like playing to win (most of the time) in the Mega League, city design, Epic projects, and war. I agree that going for max Storage is a key factor as all slots open in Stores and High-tech Factories or the pricey but pretty Nano-tech Factories. I also like the very pricey Vu Generator with all 11 slots open. I don't worry about the value of an item or building. If I like it, I get it even if I have to wait and save for it.
I plan my City as if I am really living there. I like grinding in the GTHQ for items and checking out other Cities. Most are boring, but there are always a few that I stop and study their design. There are quite a few creative players out there.
Most of all, take your slow time leveling up. There is so much to see and do on every level.
