Could not start the renderer [1001]

Ladies and gentlemen, can anyone help me with this?

Got SimCity 5, gone through the endless registration process with Origin and installed the game, all good, but now I can't actually play it, getting an error message: "Could no start the renderer.  Please ensure your display is set to 32 bit colour. [1001]

Which would be fine if my display was not set to 32 bit colour.  However, and I'm sure you'll agree this is a pretty crucial point, my display is in fact set to 32 bit colour.

So - what else could it be?

I've had a bit of a look through these help topics, which lamentably appears to be the only recourse we have as opposed to any actual contact with the distributors, despite their insistence on always-on-line of which I would have thought the most obvious advantage being that help would actually be available when needed.  Disappointing, but not my main gripe, I just want my game to work.

So anyway, some suggested updating graphics card drivers.  Fine, I can do that.  Windows thinks my graphic card driver is up to date - ah but what do they know, so I went to NVIDIA's website (graphics card is NVIDIA GeForce 7050/NVIDIA nForce 610i) and sure enough there was an update available.  Downloaded, installed... still nothing.  Same error message.

Any other ideas?

    Does it work if you change your resolution?

    Your graphics chip is too old, too primitive.  It simply is MILES below the minimum.   It's not a real card, at all, so there may be an empty add-on slot to accept a real card, if it's a desktiop box.  The rest of the hardware might be equally inadequate, it'll all be so very old now.

    goraththeelder is absolutley right.  I wasn't ready to go there because this issue has happend to people with more than capable cards.

    Is it really?

    I'm getting the exact same message.

    I'm running dual HD7770 OCs in Xfire.

    Is my graphics too old and primitive?

    This is a new issue which has come up for me today.  I have succesfully run SimCity 5 on many previous occasions, but when attempting to start the game today I am receiving this message.

    The error-handling will deal with all variations on the theme the same.  Besides a piece of hardware unable to render shader 3 graphics natively, you can have corrupted graphics drivers, a corrupted DirectX  / Direct3D API, and /or a corrupted game file.  All are possible causes.  Start from the simplest, get the latest graphics driver and install it.

    All of a sudden I'm having this same issue but I have an AMD Radeon R9 290A Series

    It worked until today and after an 'Origin Update' I am getting this error.

    Switch off the "in-game" aspect of Origin.
