Thank you, everyone, for your posts. As of a few minutes ago, it still refuses to launch. EA help suggested clearing the EA app cache. The only improvement is that the launch bar goes through two or three cycles before quitting rather than not even trying. Have not thought of uninstall/reinstall, probably because my installation is from the EA side, having been able way back when to verify that I had the discs. I have serious reservations that the attempt is even possible now.
