Hi SilverDaybreak :D
The rabbitholes are actually the pre-made buildings EA provided with the game. They are the buildings your sims disappear into for work, or the restaurants. I've always assumed the name was derived from Alice in Wonderland, down the rabbithole. You can place these rabbitholes on a lot, then decorate around it. You'll find the RH's in Build Mode, in the little menu that has the walls and fences and what not, they're in the little picture of a commercial building on the right side of the menu. Here's a good thread with a list of lots, some are optional.Community Lot Guide & Check List
Here are the base game Rh's
Town Hall
Hospital
Military Base
Theater
Bookstore
School
Grocery Store
Diner
Science Facility
Business Buildings
Spa
Bistro
Stadium
Police Department
The little dirt mounds are plant spawners, or if you have pets, it might be a place where an animal has dug a hole.
If you hold down on your center scroll button on your mouse, that moves the camera. Roll the scroll button out and in for different camera elevations. Use the shift key in combination with the scroll button to go faster.
You can also use the keyboard;
- & + for zooming in and out
< > for rotating the camera
Those other arrow keys for moving in a certain direction.
Hope this helps :D

Can you zoom out the terrain a little while you're creating roads and things so that you can see more of what you are doing at a time?
