This seemed to be the year of big events for the Holland family members. Not only did Derrick get promoted to Assistant Fire Chief a few months back...

...something happened for him and Jade that they never would've thought possible.
To start at the beginning, Derrick had been having some serious coughing episodes, which he thought was just the result of a bad cold he had that winter, but when the coughs didn't subside for months and Michael got a chance to really listen to him coughing he suggested to his son that he get some tests done, particularly a chest x-ray. Reluctantly, Derrick did so. The results of his chest x-ray showed that his lungs appeared to be a little darker than usual. His lungs were in the beginning stages of COPD. Although Derrick was not a smoker...he was exposed to a different smoke all too often in his line of work. "So I ran into a few fires without my oxygen mask," he admitted to his dad, "but there were lives at stake! I didn't have time to worry about that!" The truth was...he ran into A LOT of fires like that, but he'd never admit it to his loved ones. The most important thing to him on the job was saving lives, even if that meant losing his own. How is it that he could face bravely his mortality running through a burning building, but become fearful over the results of a chest x-ray? Even Derrick couldn't figure that out. Feeling down and depressed as he came home from his doctor appointment he decided that he needed to get away again. Find something fun to do to take his mind off the present...all his burdens, trials and heartaches. He decided to have another adventure in his Time Machine! This time, he set it to send him somewhere in the long past.

What Derrick loved about the Time Machine, besides the awesomeness of travelling through time, was that he could spend DAYS in a certain time period and only a few hours would pass back home. He didn't have to worry about leaving Jade behind for long periods of time. She was usually working anyway. After witnessing a few unusual and fascinating events in the dark ages, Derrick decided to travel a bit more forward in time. He landed near a small village in seventeenth century England. As he took in a deep breath while overlooking the lush and grassy countryside, the fresh, clean air felt good on his lungs. He savored it for a few minutes while he tried to figure out what adventure he was going to embark on next here. A good start would be to head into the village so he did just that. He obviously got a few odd looks from some of the villagers, but he couldn't help noticing something...

"NO!!" Derrick heard an old, angry voice cry out, "ENOUGH!" He suddenly found himself being sucked through the time stream, at a painfully fast pace, and thrown out the doors as vigorously as if he had been vomited out. "You have gone too far this time!" he heard the old, angry voice say again, as he shaded his eyes from the bright, cloudy smoke emanating from the opening of the Time Machine. "What's done is done and cannot be reversed! You are officially banned from time travel FOREVER!" There was a series of loud noises and the time machine rattled violently before it blew up, flying into the air and then crashing back down again. Derrick found himself almost in the fetal position when he opened his eyes. With all that dark smoke and shattered pieces on the ground, Derrick slowly stood up, dusting his pants off and realizing he'd never be able to travel through time again. That was the Keeper of Time who just spoke to him, no doubt about it. He blew up the time machine and most likely made it irreparable. The only thing Derrick couldn't figure out was what he did wrong.
"Dad?" he heard a voice address from behind him.
It was the voice of a young boy. 'Dad??' Derrick thought feeling uneasy. Gulping he gradually turned around and his eyes widened as he saw a little boy, who looked a heck of a lot like him, staring at him questionably. "Are you ok?" the boy asked. "What was that noise?"

With his heart pounding and his legs shaking, Derrick couldn't speak. This kid just called him Dad. Why? If this child was HIS...then he had CERTAINLY changed the past. But how!? Was it seriously all because he gave that arguing couple some friendly advice? Then he gaped. 'Maybe they were never supposed to stay together,' he thought. 'Oh my gosh what have I done?'
"DAD?"
Derrick still stood there frozen and bug eyed. It suddenly became clear that his past, as he knew it, was forever gone. His airway began to feel constricted and he was finding it hard to breathe. How much of the past had changed? Did he marry Jade or someone else? Was his mother still alive? There were SO many questions, but he couldn't fathom it all. He held his fingers to his forehead, feeling lightheaded.
"Should I go get grandpa?"
'Yes! My dad is still a doctor!' Derrick thought, but he still couldn't stop panicking. Everything around him became distorted and hazy as he watched his son run back into the house. Then everything became dark and he fell to the ground.
