Continuation of Chapter 35
Derrick slowly opened his eyes to see the ceiling fan blades spinning. Still feeling lightheaded, he looked around a bit to find he was lying on the couch in the living room. He could hear voices in the kitchen and squeezed his eyes shut, praying that his beloved Jade was in there and not some other wife. He knew that unfortunately what happened with him and the Time Machine was NOT a dream. He wished it was. The past had been changed so therefore his present would surely be different. The anxiety came rushing back again. Even though the fan was letting off a nice amount of cool air, he could still feel sweat on his brow. He started to wipe at it but jumped as his father suddenly appeared in the room.
"Hey son," he greeted, coming towards him. "How are you feeling?"
http://s20.postimg.org/y9oys4ljh/Derrick_fainted_2.jpg
"Dad?" Derrick greeted with a hoarse voice. Then he cleared his throat. "Gosh, I'm so glad to see you!" He gripped Michael's arm tightly.
Michael smiled while sitting down by his side. "I'm glad to see you're alright." He reached for a wet cloth that had been in a bowl on the end table and dabbed Derrick's forehead with it. "You passed out after the Time Machine exploded. What's the last thing you remember?"
"Umm," Derrick began, finding it hard not to think about how great that wet cloth felt on his sweaty forehead. "The Time Machine...exploded ...because the Keeper of Time...caught me changing something in the past...and in anger, threw me out and...destroyed the Time Machine."
"You disrupted events from the past?"
"Well, I didn't mean to! I was just having a friendly conversation with a couple who were fighting," he paused. "I guess the couple were meant to break up in that moment...not have someone come along and tell them how they need to work it out."
Michael's eyebrows jumped for a second. "That's sad," he said. "It would seem to me that you were just what they needed."
"Exactly!" Derrick said sticking his hand up. "I didn't think such a simple, kind act would change so much in time that I would come back here to find I have a Son!"
Upon hearing that, Michael stared at him dumbfoundedly. "What are you talking about?"
Derrick's eyes widened as his heart began pounding. "A SON Dad! I don't have one! I know it might sound crazy, but you've gotta believe me! That conversation I had in the past changed things to where I have a son in the future and...I've never had a child! Jade and I have been struggling to have a kid for years!"
Michael seemed to ignore what he said, wearing a face expression of concern. "I hope that blast didn't give you amnesia." He reached in his shirt pocket where he usually carried his flashlight/pen combo and shined the light in Derrick's eyes, carefully opening them with his thumb.
"Dad!" Derrick said irritably. He practically slapped his father's arm away and sat up. He needed some questions answered now! "Jade is my wife right? Jade Greenwood? PLEASE tell me she is my wife!"
"Of course she is son!"
"Oh thank goodness!" he paused. "Is mom still alive?"
"Jenni?"
"No! MY biological mom! Bronwyn?"
"No. She died years ago, Derrick. You know that."
"I DO know that, but...I was hoping..." he stopped, rubbing his temple.
"Why don't you just lie down and relax," Michael said, gently pushing his son back down on the couch. "Let me check you out here and ask you a few questions."
Derrick appreciated his dad's compassionate nature, but he said, "No Dad. I don't have amnesia. Please...hear me out and I need you to answer all of my questions."
Pursing his lips, Michael nodded, complying.
Then Derrick sat up and proceeded to ask his father more questions than he had ever asked anyone before. Much to his relief, he found out that nothing changed in his, or his family's life, at all...except for the fact that he had a son. Obviously had to ask his dad. "Then how do I have a son? Was Jade able to get pregnant?"
Michael still looked at him funny. "No Derrick. Your son, Bruce, was the child you had with your ex-wife Sofia Carlton."
"Ex-wife!?" Derrick nearly shouted out. 'Was I seriously one of THOSE husband's!?'
"Yes. I guess you don't remember...but you guys got a divorce because of her drug abuse. That's how the court ruled in favor for you to have custody of Bruce. It wasn't long after that that you married Jade. That was no surprise to all of us. You guys have been friends since high school."
Derrick couldn't lift his jaw back up. "Sofia Carlton," he said in disbelief. "How on EARTH did I marry her! She's crazy famous!"
Michael snickered upon hearing that. "Sophia? Famous? I don't think so."
"She's quite the celebrity from..." he paused, looking down, "my original past." Then he fell back down on the couch and rested the back of his hand over his forehead. "Gosh," he said breathlessly, "this is...a lot to take in."
"I understand," Michael said rubbing his son's shoulder. "How about you get some rest and I'll tell Jade about everything ok?"
Derrick nodded in thankfulness.
"Derrick!?" he heard Jade cry. He opened his eyes to find his wife throwing herself on him, grabbing his cheeks and pulling his lips towards hers. After a rather intense kiss, she pressed her nose against his and said, "I'm so glad to see that you're awake! I was SO worried!"
"It's ok," Derrick whispered. "I'm alright. It's not as bad as it looked, I promise."
Then Jade looked up at her father-in-law. "Is he going to be ok?"
"Yeah," Michael said with a nod. "His vitals are normal. No serious injuries or amnesia. He just needs to rest for a bit."
Jade smiled brightly as she stroked Derrick's cheek. "I'm glad."
"Let's go into the other room Jade," Michael suggested, leading his daughter-in-law out.
When they entered the dining room, Jade said, "I'll go upstairs and let Bruce know that Derrick is ok."
"Wait," Michael said, taking her arm. "There's something I need to tell you."
Jade looked at him questionably. No doubt worrying that maybe something else really was wrong with Derrick that Michael didn't want to mention in front of him.
"Derrick's memories...," he began, "are not the same as ours."
"What do you mean?"
http://s20.postimg.org/npf19jh1p/Derrick_fainted_1.jpg
"It's a lot to explain, but I need this to stay between the three of us alright? No one else needs to know, especially Bruce. I'd hate for his feelings to get hurt."
Jade wasn't sure if she wanted to agree to that without hearing the details, but she nodded and said. "I understand. Now tell me...what's going on?"
****************
The next morning, after waking up with an aching back and going back to sleep in his real bed, Derrick got up early to do the one thing that helped to clear his mind: Exercise. He was determined to do his very best to act normally around his son, accept him as his own and get used to his new reality. In all honesty things could've turned out MUCH WORSE! He wondered how his chat with the arguing couple got him into a relationship with Sofia Carlton, but he decided he wasn't going to dwell on that anymore. As he lifted weights, he thought, 'I am just going to move forward. Like nothing ever changed.' Deep down, he really was excited to have a son.

Bruce turned out to be a really good kid with excellent manners. He would ask to be excused from the table when he was done eating...
http://s20.postimg.org/ig73lnfv1/Bruce_s_party_4.jpg
...and even take out the trash without being asked.
http://s20.postimg.org/q1a4h4avh/Bruce_s_party_5.jpg
Derrick never felt so proud. It comforted him to know that he had become the parent he always wanted to be...or at least he hoped he did. He obviously did something right! Most likely with the help of his other half. Jade had always been good with kids and was a pretty amazing woman. Of course, he already knew that.
It was a joy getting to know Bruce better. His favorite thing to do was play catch and Derrick found he was sorely lacking in that department.
http://s20.postimg.org/ou0s2na4t/Bruce_s_party_9.jpg
He did manage to throw the ball with enough force to make Bruce unable to catch it...
http://s20.postimg.org/n9quqicct/Bruce_s_party_7.jpg
...but it smacked Bruce pretty hard on his stomach. "Ow dad!" he cried.
http://s20.postimg.org/t0h148kct/Bruce_s_party_8.jpg
"Are you alright?" Derrick asked. "Sorry about that son."
Bruce picked up the ball and rubbed his stomach a bit. "It's ok," he said. "I guess you're getting better. I need to step up my game!"
Derrick smiled.
Bruce was also an excellent swimmer and even beat Derrick in a few "holding your breath under water" contests.
http://s20.postimg.org/twdijou19/Bruce_s_party_6.jpg
Of course Derrick attributed that to his COPD which was the ONE thing he wished had changed from his interfering with the past! He realized he still had it when his father came over to check on him one morning, testing his lung capacity, before leaving for work.
"Now remember," Michael told him, "keep that oxygen tank and mask on you, don't forget to take your medication and please try to get plenty of rest when you aren't working!"
"Yes dad," Derrick acknowledged with a sigh. "I can't promise the 'plenty of rest,' in my line of work, but I will do my best."
http://s20.postimg.org/raawsrll9/Derrick_fainted_4.jpg
"I know," Michael said hugging him. "Best of luck out there today Assistant Chief!" He patted Derrick on the back. "I'm proud of you son."

****************
On this day it was Bruce's sixth birthday. Jade kindly reminded Derrick about it the day before and he got to work setting up the decorations. He was expecting to have a bunch of kids over, but they decided a while back just to have a family party. Of course he couldn't remember that. Bruce was thrilled to find that his dad bought a Special FX Machine to add a little more awesomeness to his party.
http://s20.postimg.org/8cmz38oi5/Bruce_s_party_12.jpg
"You're the BEST dad!" he said, jumping into his father's arms.
"Of course Bruce," Derrick said. "You're the BEST son!"
Jade smiled at them.
When Bruce let go he said, "But we will bring the machine back inside once everyone comes over right?"
"Definitely!"
It wasn't long until the family started to arrive.
http://s20.postimg.org/gpsnxwnpp/Bruce_s_party_13.jpg
Derrick loved seeing the greeting between Bruce and his little brother Ken. They were obviously best friends. Seeing the many dishes his family members brought and placed on the dining table he asked the crowd, "Gee everyone. Do you think we have enough food?" They all laughed.
http://s20.postimg.org/aq4wu92x9/Bruce_s_party_16.jpg
After eating they went on to sing the birthday song to Bruce and enjoyed some cake. How fun it was to watch his excitement while opening presents. Derrick just shook his head with a smile thinking, 'I never thought I'd be able to have a moment like this.' Then he paused. 'Wait! Am I actually grateful for messing up the past?' He grinned again. 'Yeah...I think I am.'
Once it got dark everyone thought it would be fun to dance outside in the moonlight.

"C'mon mom," Bruce whined, "just five more minutes in the pool with Ken! We're having so much fun."
"I'm sorry Bruce, but no," Jade said. "You need to head upstairs and do your homework that's due tomorrow before it gets too late!"
http://s20.postimg.org/osm8vhix9/Bruce_s_party_10.jpg
"Hello?" Derrick said, while answering his phone. "Yes, this is Holland."
http://s20.postimg.org/v55zj2bd9/Bruce_s_party_19.jpg
He couldn't STAND it when work interrupted his family get togethers. He, Andrea and Bailey were having a very nice time catching up until his phone rang. "No, It's my son's birthday party right now," he told the person on the other end. "Have the Chief take care of this one."
"Wow! He can get away with that?" Bailey whispered to Andrea.
"I guess so," Andrea replied.
"Lucky!"

It was one enjoyable evening and it was always a little hard for Derrick to say goodbye to his family, even though they all lived in town. He cherished his relationship with his siblings. A lot of people weren't as lucky being so close to them as he was.
It was right after he had gotten comfortable in his bed, ready to go to sleep when Derrick received another call. It turned out that the Chief didn't want to take care of the "situation" and quit. Derrick was shocked, but didn't have much time to dwell on it as he had to get dressed and hurry out the door. It was after this event, and of course the lack of a Fire Chief, that Derrick was promoted.
http://s20.postimg.org/sca2ebtvw/Derricks_promotion_to_fire_chief.jpg
'Oh yeah!' Derrick thought as he ran off to work the following day as the new Fire Chief. This was what he always dreamed of.

That evening after dinner, Jade got into her pajamas much earlier than usual and declared that she was heading off to bed.
"Are you alright?" Derrick asked her.
"You're not sick are you mom?" Bruce asked.
"No," Jade chuckled. "I just had a long day at work and am feeling pretty tired."
"Yeah, being a toddler sports coach will do that to ya," Derrick said to her with a wink. "Speaking of which," he said coming closer to her. Bruce was standing right there so he tried to ask this quietly enough so he wouldn't hear. "Are we still having fertility issues?"
http://s20.postimg.org/8wxes6sct/Bruce_s_party_3.jpg
"Yes," Jade whispered back. "BUT...my OB recommended In vitro and we told him we needed to think about it. What with the cost and everything."
"What's there to think about?" Derrick asked more loudly. "Let's do it!"
Jade smiled nervously. "Are...are you sure?"
"OF COURSE!"
"Do what?" Bruce asked.
"Nothing," Jade said, patting his shoulder. "We'll tell you later."
The couple kissed each other lovingly and never felt more sure of this decision. Life was wonderful!
More to come. :)
