Chapter 38
The next morning, back at the University, Andrea got up early to greet the day of finals. She felt prepared, but her stomach still felt sick with worry about Daniel and his mother. The first thing she did was check her phone to see if Daniel had left her any messages. None. That was ok, she knew he had a lot going on. She did however leave him a message on his voice mail saying she hoped he made it there safely, sent her regards to his mother and told him she hoped to hear from him soon. Then off she went to take the grueling finals.
Taking three different finals in ONE day was wearing, especially with all the worry in the back of her mind. In between classes she checked her phone and still hadn't gotten a call or text back from Daniel. Growing even more concerned she called again and begged Daniel to call her and let her know what was going on. She even called over to his mother's house and there was no response there. Unfortunately, she didn't have his brother's phone number. With nothing else left to do she prayed to God that Daniel would call her soon and that he was ok. That night she kept the phone religiously by her side, anxiously awaiting to hear from her husband, but didn't realize she had fallen asleep.
Once she did wake, she jumped up from her pillow in an instant, glancing at the clock. It said 7:38. Thank goodness it was a Saturday and that she didn't have to worry about attending any classes. Next she grabbed her phone to see if she missed a call or text from Daniel. To her utter disappointment there was nothing. Growing frantic, she began to cry and debated on whether to call the police. She prayed again, begging God that nothing serious happened to her husband and that...well...she didn't even want to THINK about that!! She then called her parents and told them everything that was going on. They suggested that since it had been practically two days since she heard from Daniel, it would probably be a good time to call the police and file a missing person's report. In the meantime, Michael made preparations to fly out and be with Andrea during this time. That provided a tiny bit of comfort, but it didn't help make it any easier when she called the Police Department.
After getting in touch with the Police, Andrea called Daniel once again and there was still no answer. She left a message letting him know that she filed a missing person's report and...that she loved him dearly and prayed he would call her back soon. Things were starting to look pretty hopeless at this point...
Around four in the afternoon that day, there was a knock at her front door. Andrea never remembered racing to the door so fast! She hoped more then ANYTHING that Daniel was behind the door, but...it wasn't so. It was two Police Officers.
"Mrs. Vaughn?" One of the them addressed.
Andrea's body froze. "Yes?" she replied.
The officer introduced himself and his partner. Then he asked if they could come in. Andrea didn't hesitate to let them in. She wanted to ask about Daniel's wherabouts so badly, but she couldn't get the words out of her mouth. Thankfully, the officer mentioned what she was thinking. "We have some news about your husband Daniel."
"Yes!" Andrea cried. "Is he alright!? Oh gosh, please tell me he's alright!" She clasped her fingers together below her chin, as if begging.
The officers kept their face expressions blank. "Mrs. Vaughn," the main officer began, "I regret to inform you that your husband...has passed away."
Andrea's eyes widened with shock and they began filling rapidly with tears.
"He was involved in a car accident, forty miles outside of his hometown. Two nights ago. I have the information here to--"
"No!" Andrea said...lowering herself to the floor. She couldn't move, not even to wipe the flood of tears falling down her cheeks. "No. No!"
The officer bent down to offer comfort, but jumped as Andrea screamed, dropping her arms to the floor, burying her face in them and wailing.
Michael arrived an hour later to find that his worst fear had been realized. His daughter was given the worst news possible, unable to stop crying and his son-in-law...was dead. Earlier, the officer tried to give Andrea more information regarding where Daniel's body was and who she needed to contact about his death, but she couldn't pay attention to any of it. He left his card with her and told her to contact him as soon as she was able. After reiterating as much as she could to her father, she passed the card to him to make the call and retreated to her room.
