Nilxis has some pictures on how to make a smooth beach- http://nilxisdesigns.blogspot.com.es/p/tutoriales.html
The world map edges are above the water; if you want or allow the view to see the edges then you'll have to lower all the edges of the map into the world. Make a beach or cliffs or some edge to the world. :)
I usually sculpt the land and then place the roads but there's always some sculpting and road moving later. Never have placed roads perfectly the first time. :)
