It was never a good day when you were in the office by yourself. Somehow it seemed that whenever Rose was out of the office, everything went wrong. Already today you had somehow managed to break the coffee maker, been forced to abandon concentration on a floorplan to answer the phone and now the file for the build you just finished seems to have disappeared!

As you mutter to yourself, a little burst of light in the corner of your eye catches your attention. Quickly picking yourself up, you see the little flash of light dart just behind the frame of a door. “What the-? Hello?” Curious now, you follow it, trying to figure out if its someone playing with a laser pointer, a reflection from outside or a possible hallucination from the horrible coffee you made earlier in the day.

After about five minutes, the will-o-the-wisp light vanishes back into your office and is gone. “Huh…Weird.” Still confused, you step over to your desk and pick up the tar that is your coffee. After a long swallow that makes you again regret giving Rose the day off to take her dog to the vet, you realize that there's an strange aftertaste to the drink. It's an odd flavor, something like the way a forest smells mixed with a hint of sparkling… something. You can't even think of what its like.

Even more perplexed you look down into the mug and catch the faintest glimmer of stardust across the surface of the liquid. Then the room around you fades to a mist. It clears quickly and you have a hard time keeping your jaw from dropping.

All around you are stone ruins, deep gray with green moss and vines draped over them. Around the ruins huge trees tower above. The most musical birdsong you’ve ever heard drifts through the air, which smells of pine and woodsmoke. Something about the combination brings back a memory of listening to fairy tales as a kid. With a reminiscent smile on your lips, you turn around to look some more.

Now your jaw really does drop. Standing behind you, watching you silently, are at least 50 people… well not people, specifically. You’re pretty sure you see a few elves, a flying carpet and… and… You struggle to wrap your mind around it as that will-o-the-wisp you chased around your office flitters over the crowd to stop in front of you. With a small starburst of light, it goes from a glowing powderpuff to… a human size fairy? You’re pretty sure that whatever was in that cup probably WAS NOT meant for human consumption.

The fairy, a beautiful woman in a gauzy blue gown, smiles. “You aren't dreaming. Nor are you hallucinating. I am the Fairy Godmother.”

“Um… ok, then. Hi?” You know you sound like an idiot, but you cant help it.

Her smile is understanding, “I know you must be confused. I will try to explain. You are in the world of Storytime. Here dwell all the fairy tales that your world has read and told to others over all the centuries.”

She gestures, “The Three Bears.” A little bear, tucked into the arms of a truly huge bear wearing an apron, waves as Papa Bear standing nearby tips his hat to you.

“Cinderella.” An elegant looking princess curtsies.

“Aladdin.” A dark skinned rogue grins mischievously at you.

“And so many more,” says the Fairy. “So many in your world have read of us, believed in us and loved us that we became real. We built our homes in this half world of dreams and managed to live peacefully.”

“Sounds like a great life," you smile. "So… why am I here?” you add, hoping you don't sound rude.

“We need your help.” She sighs, “With any amount of light, you also have shadows. The brighter the light, the darker the shadows. One particularly dark shadow, the dark fairy who cursed Briar Rose, decided she no longer could tolerate the light. She led the others against us, destroyed our homes and chased us out.”

She waves her wand and the ruins open up to a beautiful rolling valley bordered by the sea. you recognize it as Sunset Valley! “We have come here, to the very edge of our world where it rubs up against your world. Since they are so close together, our new home is a mirror of yours in many ways: geography, a few buildings. But we need new homes. Even here we’ve heard of your skills, your talent and how happy you’ve made the people in your world. We want you to build our homes, so we can have a fresh start. Will you help us?”

You stay silent for a moment, rubbing the back of your neck and looking over the valley. Then you turn back to the assorted fairytale folks, and take a deep breath. “I’m definitely going to need some help on this one…”
