This is just me, but I'm a lot more gentle with the sims in my worlds than many players are. If I want a household to "suffer," for example, I might consider giving them all upper end appliances, electronics, hot tubs, art work, and expensive cars that they cannot really afford to sustain then watch while they, under the SP Money structure I have set up, go bankrupt trying to pay the ensuing outrageous property taxes on all that stuff. Then they tend to move into a downsized lot with much more modest furnishings on their own or, if kids aren't involved, the household might have to split up and some of them may have to move in with friends to save money.
Of course, in most of these scenarios with or without the violence, the target sim won't know why these unfortunate things are happening to them. If that's meant to be part of the equation, then the question becomes much more tricky to answer. ;)
