Are You Farming?
Grand Pa's Grove turned out to be the best purchase I've made from The Sims 3 Store. I use it a lot. The theme was pack worthy. I don't make traditional farms growing vegetables, eggs, and dairy....

Lol ... I do the same thing, with more recipes.
My Sims also invest heavily in upgrading all the community lots.
When they are done with those, they upgrade other Sims' houses to meet basic requirements, free of cost to the Sim.
When they are done with that ... They give every teen (or applicable household) in the town, that graduates High School ...
The equivalent of a complete scholarship to University.
I don't look at the profit in numbers or margins so to say, as much as in time.
Producing what is necessary, in the shortest amount of time, that provides the greatest benefit for my Sims and their community.
Profit means a great deal more than money ... :D
But I dig what you say about liking the job and the setting.

Ooh, I've recently had so much fun with that.
I played a sim that made over sunset valley by buying properties and improving them.

I added other community lots and residential lots as his improvements increased.

Now that I think about it, that sim started off by growing life fruit and cloning money tree seeds to use as seed money for his real estate investments. :D I was eager to get the town started.
My current sims are living in a copy of that world.
Once I've gotten their new home established with a full nectar cellar, I will take more time to enjoy playing in Sunset Valley and interacting with the other sims.
Story progression has been doing some crazy match-ups, moving sims all over the place.
