Does anyone know of a good free program that will let me edit .dds images?

Most of the image files for the Sims 3 CAW in the source textures folder are something called .dds, and Graphics Gale can't load that file type. I'm hoping to be able to create a slightly darker version of the "dry grass" for my next world.

Please let me know if you know of any good ( preferably freeware ) art programs that will load that file type so that I can create a modify it.

    Hi :)
You can open it with Gimp 2 and save it as a .png or .jpg. The textures don't have to be saved at .dds anymore.

If you feel you have to use .dds, then there's a plugin for Gimp 2 you can add. I don't know where it is because I don't use it any more.

I found this to help you save as .dds with Gimp, if you choose. https://forums.thesims.com/en_US/discussion/152801/the-easy-way-to-create-terrain-textures/p1
Remember, you don't have to any more. Try the texture as .png and see if you like the results. :)
  • Thanks @Rflong7 ! Do have a link to their official website, where I can download it?

  • Thanks for the suggestion @PhenomIIFX! GIMP seems to be working fine for me at the moment, after I convert them to TGA images, so I'm good. May be I will try it some other time however.
  • Thanks @dearie_blossom. Even if I don’t end up using that, someone else might.
