Last name changes after marriage

So I don't like hyphenated names and and every time someone gets married it always is the same thing. Can I have it so it's just like the husband's name? I have the master controller as well as story progression mods. What can I do?

  • If you are still getting the hyphenated name then exiting the game and then removing the *cache files, especially the scriptcache.package file might work.

Also keep in mind that the setting is customizable on both husband/wife and same gender marriages, so you can still get hyphenated names on same gender marriages if you dont change the setting for both.

Though as someone with a real life hyphenated name, y'all are a bunch of haters :D

I don't mind hyphenated names, per se. But after a couple of generations you end up with Smith-Broke-Fangsworth-Goth-Throatwarblermangrove as a last name and it gets unwieldy.

I generally set it to randomly use one or the other last name.

I have a hyphenated last name too. It's one of the worst mistakes I've ever made in my life. So many businesses' computers can't handle hyphenated names, my name has been slaughtered in many ways. One time when we were refinancing our mortgage, the papers we had to sign had this long list of all the ways my name appeared incorrectly on my credit report, and they wanted me to sign them all according to how my name was slaughtered all those times. I told them I only have one signature, and it's the only one I use, no matter how badly some company slaughters my name.

Recently, I was denied an application to open a savings account because they couldn't confirm my identity. I'm pretty sure it's because Transunion's computers can't handle hyphenated names. Way back when I started getting the free annual credit reports, I signed up for an account with Transunion, so I could check or correct my credit report online. It accepted my hyphenated name as my user name, and allowed me to create the account. But when I went back, months later, to actually use the account, it said that "special characters" are not allowed in user names. It allowed me to use the hyphen to create the account, but will not allow me to use it to log in.

If I had it to do over again, I'd skip the hyphen and just take my husband's last name.
  • @IreneSwift special characters are often converted to _ character. If you tried replacing the - with _ when you log in it might work. Just a thought.
  • @IreneSwift I can 100% relate to that, my personal favourite is when they stick the first chunk of my last name as my first name. I was born into my last name, though I do joke that if I get married I'll just shove my husbands last name at the end with another hyphen ;)
  • I had a question for @coco I was meaning to ask, how do you get the Prompt to pick the names of people who get married and babies? I searched all through SP but couldn't find anything?
  • @MKSizzle It's under Romance: Marriage Name. Set it to Prompt and any new marriages in the town will bring up a pop up window where you can type in the last name you want. Children should be renamed automatically after marriage I think. Is that what you're asking?
  • The Prompt choice should be on the same list as the hyphenated options that were de-selected earlier. NRaas > SP > Town Options > Romance:Marriage Name should be the full path. It will show up on Caste, Household, and Sim Options as well, but that only displays or changes the selection for a subset (or one) sim, not townwide.

One thing this thread is inspiring me to do is give a household "Hyphen" (the word, not the punctuation mark) as an actual surname. Then one of them grows up and starts dating one of the Semicolons who live next door. Or maybe one of the Dashes across the street. I think you can see where this might be going. o:)
