That's definitely an improvement! What I have done is to make sure when I use the shale texture it's on areas that can stretch it and on small rocks. Then it works and works beautifully. Then I use the granite base for areas that don't stretch out so far.
I love the fact that you are showing so many layers here on your mountain. I think many people either don't get how to layer textures or don't want to spend the time. For seriously, texture layering can make or break a terrain paint job. It takes a ton of work and even more experimenting but the end justifies the means. That is nicely done.
