I find that with all the things that my sim has to do to ensure that they keep themselves financially afloat. Having them constantly going to the can makes them lose essential time that they need during the day. Especially when half the time, when you click them, they end up standing around for a half hour before they get their butt prodded into action. I don't do hardly hungry or dirt-defiant. I will send them to the kitchen to make food or shower when their cleanliness meter goes down, but that's the limit. Like @JoAnne65 stated: you don't need to see them go to the washroom. But pee/poop is a waste of time...on the whole, as the timing is not metered very accurately on certain actions. It doesn't take 25 min. to go in RL and frankly if it takes that long, then one needs to see an endocronologist to see if there are any underlying symptoms. :D Thanks, Sims 3, evidently no specialists in the medical field, huh? Because considering the time it takes for each sim to do their business, they all have pancreatic problems.
