I've found a workaround.
• Add the game to Steam.
• Quit Origin if it's running.
• Run the game from Steam. It will start Origin, start Titanfall and show that you're in game while Origin client is running.
• After the game: Close Origin again to stop Steam from showing that you're playing Titanfall.
Simple: run the game from Steam, close Origin before and after.
zombieff - that doesn't work. Steam will show you in-game for 2-3 seconds, then it will revert back to whatever status you were previously. You can check by alt-tabbing out of the game...

It does work for me. What you're describing is if the Origin is running. Close it before starting the game from Steam.
However, Origin overlay does not work this way, only Steam overlay does.

somebody must have updated something, because the Reddit-style workaround was required just a few days ago to play Titanfall. NOW that workaround does NOT work, and the standard method works totally fine. i guess they realized it was broken and actually fixed it? o_O;
