I think it does appear to be going down, but the hedges will serve that purpose better (I think the darker edges on top are more defined on hedges vs the wall)

I might be wrong but i think the bushes are a touch taller than the stones.
I would leave the slopes stone. Replacing bushes will bring up the edges plus the contrasting colors(bush top perimeter and stone going down) will pop more.
