90 donuts opinions: Shauna, Dr Nick, other?

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I gained about 90 donuts from the Christmas stockings and have never spent real money on the game. I have always debated buying a small amount since I play so often (to give the developers something for this free game) but there wasn't much great for $5-10 and I always managed to lose a lot of the donuts I have accumulated from accidental tapping (but luckily was able to speed the Simpsons house up with 2 donuts once!).
So I am probably not going to have this many donuts again. Shauna was low on my radar but the limited time factor bumps her up. If I don't buy any more donuts, though, it sounds like Dr. Nick is the way to go? Character-wise, he would be one of my top choices.
The rumors about the upcoming update - are you implying that I shoul save for
