Personally i wouldn't mind a in game messaging system, probably the best way this could work is:
EA could use the Post Office building, if you had a message an envelope would appear and float above the building, you would then of course Tap it, to which you could read your message from your neighbour :) Sending a message would work the same way.
Now the issue with messaging people the only way i could see EA even contemplating this would be that the messages were pre-scripted, meaning you have a certain selection of messages to choose from (you cannot write your own text basically) having set messages would stop and type of aggressive text being sent to people.
