City picture

H! I have a question about the city picture function. I did some pictures yesterday, buy today the app tells me that it is not possibile because it requires more than 2GB of space. But i have more than 10GB of space and the pictures done yesterday are just some MB of size. What am I missing?
  • When I had this problem, it didn't require making space in the storage, it required making space in the cache. I cleared the cache and problem went away. Now I clear my cache at least once a week and never have this problem anymore.

You're confusing ROM and storage. ROM is Read Only Memory. That's like a cartridge you stuck in the back of the computer to play a game. Or the operating system of a Commodore Vic20/64/128 .
ROM is RAM that has permanent values set in it.
Virtual RAM is set up in your Storage (aka Hard Drive, Floppy Disk , Zip Disk, Solid State Storage)
Our towns are built and stored in Virtual RAM (Random Access Memory). That's why it takes so long to start the game.
Here's a link for more info that I googled up.
  • I'm sorry IDK anything about apple products. Hopefully someone else will chime in, but you might find help on Google. Good luck!

The problem with ios is that you lose a lot of space with the operations system and it looks like you have a lot of space left. If you go to setting then general, go into iphone storage, you can see everything thats being used, scoll to the bottom of this page and you can see how much storage you lose due to system and other - these are a huge problem with low memory devices as you lose quite a bit of storage.
  • It is wierd because I also have up to 80GB of free space on my iPad and it still telling me that can’t proceed with the panoramic picture because it needs 9GB. And also: 9GB for a picture? Really?
  • The City pic is created when the device goes through your entire town taking screenshots, then it assembles them into a single image. One time I actually saw the process glitch, so it was displaying this process on the screen. It was just jumping around my town. It takes a LOT of screenshots before assembling them. So I can imagine some Dev set a minimum requirement to take them and hold them in a temporary folder, plus have enough memory muscle left to correctly assemble and match all their edges. They must have set 9gb for your device model. Each model may be different.

But RAM has always been different than ROM on computers, and mobile devices are very similarly structured. What we need is more available RAM, the working memory. Usually on PCs we can designate additional ROM to become available as virtual RAM. So it's just some value that's set by us or itself. If we can increase that value, that would be a solution. Basically, not emptying the cache; but making it larger.

But usually emptying the cache folder is sufficient. Android lets you do it in the storage settings. There's a breakdown of what's in storage, and just tapping the cache value offers a chance to empty it. I wish iOS offered this somehow but idk
  • Very interesting. Could be useful to understand how long it does keep cache occuped. I was able to do it twice and from then it is blocked
  • Im not confused I was just making a simple analogy to storage vs cache memory types; since ppl keep saying they have open storage available. There's more than one type of "memory"
