Is it worth buying items with doughnuts to increase it? As in the bonus money earned from it, i am on 40%

Look for the cheapest decorations with the highest multipliers. Jet Engine Bikes are the best permanent ones, although they sometimes have ones that are good deals during events.
I think it is worth using donuts on decorations with multipliers. These will pay better than buildings. At 40% it's probably going to be difficult to donut farm. One thing you can do is put out all of your Springfield Heights buildings to add up to 153% xp bonus to that score. It will remain hidden because they don't have a meter for xp only. Also, the Private Islands must be upgraded above Level 1 to receive the xp bonus.
