I like that there are some items that are exclusive to long-term players, like the Duff Racer, and the Cool Brown House/Hipster Homer.
I think they did it right with Barney. Players who were playing at the right time got him for free as part of a seasonal quest-line, and people who came along later were able to buy him for donuts.
