SP thing is still working as far as I can tell. I still get several every day, and still have neighbors with their tiles up. Some of my neighbors maxed out, though, and if you clear your "base" tile and are maxed out, you can't build another one. But, fortunately, it's been found that the same process works for the open-air stage, farm, and channel six broadcasts, so I can still help some people with that. I now have my channel six right next to SP (my farm has pretty much always been next to it) so it's easy for my neighbors who are in the know to just tap those three things and be on their merry. I'd like a few more such neighbors. Need to start keeping a log so I know who to cull from my list. (I hate doing that, I wish I could just add people.)
