I think it's what currant devises can handle without crashing more then anything. As older/slower devises are weeded out of the game, limits will be able to go up more.
Totally feel the pain though. I'm a huge design fan and I've been bumping against the ceiling for a while. Even been removing bridges at river road edges where they aren't as noticeable.
